Football: Tuerk signs with USC; Welch absent

February 1st, 2012, 12:10 pm by

From left to right, Katy Crouse, Mitchell Vallis, Max Tuerk, Alaina Arthur and Rachel Steiker at Santa Margarita's signing day ceremony.

All-County offensive lineman Max Tuerk signed with USC during a signing ceremony with other Santa Margarita athletes on Wednesday morning at Santa Margarita High.

Tuerk’s parents were in attendance, but Eagles football coach Harry Welch, who is on administrative leave, was not at the signing ceremony.

“Max’s mom and dad were here this morning,” Santa Margarita athletic director Richard Schaaf said. “For him to sign, and there’s a real possibility he could walk on and be a starting offensive lineman, is exciting. I guess USC just signed some guy from up in Washington and he’s one of the top-five guys in the country, so it sounds like they got a great freshmen group coming in.”

Welch unhappy with Santa Margarita effort in victory (video)

September 30th, 2011, 3:54 am by

Santa Margarita coach Harry Welch saw his team improve to 5-0 with a victory over Los Alamitos, 38-27, on Thursday night, but Welch wasn’t pleased with his team’s effort in the contest.

“I think we were waiting for the game to be over,” Welch said. “I love my team, but I’m not an exceptionally proud father right now.

“We made mistakes that we normally don’t make. I’m not very happy.”

The Eagles led by 24 points after a Ryan Wolpin touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but that’s when things started to go down hill for the stars of OCVarsity.com’s “Tough Knocks” show.

Los Alamitos marched down the field and scored on a 7-yard Cody Paul touchdown run, and the Griffins scored again after Eagles  quarterback Johnny Stanton fumbled the ball away.

It was a sloppy fourth quarter from the No. 3 ranked team in the county.

Football: San Clemente’s Murphy lands No. 1 ranking by SuperPrep

August 11th, 2011, 3:21 pm by

San Clemente senior-to-be left tackle Kyle Murphy has been ranked as the No. 1 offensive lineman in the nation by Laguna Beach-based SuperPrep in its 2011 preseason issue.

Here is a sample of what SuperPrep said about Murphy – who also is ranked No. 1 in OCVarsity.com’s current Top 25 and also uncommited:

“He’s an NFL guy-in-waiting and could fit in a college program now if he suddenly walked on campus.”

Not good news for San Clemente’s opponents in 2011.

Here are other players from Orange County who landed in the Far West rankings (Murphy was only O.C. player in the SuperPrep Pre-Season 50)

Football recruiting: Santa Margarita’s Tuerk commits to USC

May 25th, 2011, 9:26 am by

Santa Margarita All-County offensive lineman Max Tuerk (6-6, 295) committed to USC on Wednesday morning, Eagles football coach Harry Welch confirmed moments ago.

Steve Fryer first reported the news of the commitment for OCVarsity.com.

“He said he’s going to be a Trojan,” Welch said. “I’m very happy for him. … I would have been happy with any good decision.”

Tuerk, a junior, had several offers — including Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Arizona State and UCLA in the Pac-12 and Nebraska among others — but the Trojans swooped in Wednesday. They offered Tuerk and he committed the same morning.

Tuerk, a first-team All-County pick as a junior, moves well for his size. The Eagles like to move to different spots on the line. He also plays defensive end for Santa Margarita.
