MV’s Redfield gets an Irish visit

November 27th, 2012, 11:39 am by

Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly was at Mission Viejo High’s gym Monday to visit Mission Viejo senior receiver/defensive back Max Redfield. Redfield is on the Diablos basketball team, which played North Torrance on Monday in the Diablo Inferno tournament.

Redfield had committed to USC this past spring, withdrew the commitment and re-entered the recruiting process. He made a recruiting trip to Notre Dame in October. Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson said Oregon and Washington also are in the mix for Redfield.

Redfield might have been the best all-around player in county football this season. He also is a good basketball player. Redfield scored 20 points in Mission’s 91-33 victory over North Torrance.

Football recruiting: Mission Viejo’s Redfield reportedly decommits from USC

November 4th, 2012, 10:20 pm by

Mission Viejo safety/wide receiver Max Redfield, the No. 1 recruit in Orange County, has de-committed from USC, according to ESPN.

Redfield recently took a visit to Notre Dame and according to ESPN Recruiting Nation, will visit Washington this coming weekend.

Here’s what ESPN reported that Redfield said of his decision via his Facebook page:

“Going back on my word is something I never imagined doing and it hurts me to do it but in the end I feel is necessary to do in order to decide what college I want to go to and in the end what path I want to take in life. For many different reasons I am choosing to decommit from USC and re-open recruiting. I am sorry to the people I might let down or hurt in this decision but it is a decision that is crucial for my future athletically, academically, and spiritually.”

Football: Who is O.C.’s best football player entering the season?

August 9th, 2012, 7:57 pm by

I’m hard at work on another edition of Orange County’s Hot 100 players to watch. It’s a fun but challenging task to forecast — hopefully all — of the top players to watch before the football season begins.

Who saw Josh Webb’s dramatics coming for Garden Grove in 2010? Who knew Conner Manning of El Toro would become the county’s first 4,000-yard passer in 2011?

What player should be ranked No. 1 in the county going into this season? That’s my question at the moment but feel free to send me or post your nominations for the Hot 100 players here (email: dalbano@ocregister.com).

Mission’s Redfield commits to USC

July 18th, 2012, 12:11 pm by

Mission Viejo receiver/defensive back Max Redfield, left, confirmed today he has committed to USC.

Redfield was All-Orange County first team defense last season as a junior. He had 91 tackles and three interceptions, and 22 receptions for 415 yards and 22 touchdowns. Redfield, listed last year as 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, also is a standout in basketball and track.

USC and Oregon were his favorite potential college destinations. They were not the only schools that offered Redfield a scholarship. Every other college football program that thought it had a chance at Redfield offered, too, and Redfield had narrowed his list of possibilities to Cal, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Washington.

Redfield said USC had much to offer.

“The education and coaching are unmatched,” he said. “And the talent they’re bringing in with my class is the best in the nation.”

Although he has made the decision, Redfield said he still plans on taking most or all of the five official recruiting visits he is allowed. “Oregon and Notre Dame for sure,” said Redfield of the recruiting visits. “And maybe Cal or Oklahoma or even USC.”

“When summer starts, I’m probably going to try to start narrowing it down and then I’ll make a decision after my football season, actually. … I’m still trying to choose what official visits I’m going take and unofficials I’m going to take in the summer, maybe. I haven’t set up anything.”

Redfield had a strong showing Sunday despite his recently transition from basketball to football.
