No. 5 Mater Dei vs. Carson
Friday, at Santa Ana Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Let the post-Matt Barkley era begin. The day many close to Monarch Nation feared is finally here.

After four years, No. 5 is no longer under center for the Monarchs. Next in line is … who knows?

When fall training camp opened, the starting job was up in the air. Chase Favreau, Jack Doll and Max Wittek were all fighting for the right to be the “Next Guy.”

Will the next quarterback please stand up?

The Monarchs will have some talent at the skill positions -- Victor Blackwell, Jordan Allen and AJ Roth.

The major concern for Coach Bruce Rollinson is up front on the offensive and defensive lines. If those two areas come around, then the Monarchs will be dangerous; if they don't improve, then ...

These two teams staged an early-season classic last year, as the Monarchs defeated the Colts, 46-43, in triple-overtime.

The Colts, who play in the Marine League in the L.A. City Section, return 13 starters from last season’s team. The City Section hasn’t fared well against the Southern Section recently.

Will this be the start of something new?

*The rankings are based on the OCVarsity.com preseason poll

Check out the rest of this week's Calhoun Six:

But Aaron Corp's cracked fibula played a part.

Why I always thought Barkley would prevail:

He is the most college football-ready QB I have seen here in OC, and that group includes Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer and Mark Sanchez.

He is a cool-headed yet fired-up competitor (an unusual combination). His arm strength is ridiculous, and he stays in the present, i.e. learns from a mistake and then moves on.

If Barkley struggles a lot, Corp moves into that No. 1 slot and maybe never gives it back up. And it would have to be a lot of struggling for Coach Pete Carroll to do that, because he wants to be very careful not to mess up the freshman's psyche.

We shall see.

It's National Signing Day, one of the biggest days of a high school season. I'll be here all day to give you the latest on Orange County's high school signings.

So what will be the biggest story of the day?

I'll go with the future of Tesoro wide receiver recruit Preston King. He's a San Diego State lean but will he sign with the Aztecs and bypass his favorite college team, USC? How about Colorado and a teaming with former Tesoro star Scott McKnight? USC and Colorado have offered preferred walkons.

I also will be posting a video interview of Orange County's No. 1 prospect, Matt Barkley, who has already enrolled at USC.

I also will have some Junior College transfer news.

So stayed tuned or keep checking back here for the latest.
