Fryer’s prediction: Barkley’s decision

December 22nd, 2011, 10:20 am by

I have written here, and said on the Sports Lodge radio show (I am on briefly with Rodger Lodge on KLAA/830 AM every Friday at 9:30 a.m.!!!) that Barkley will remain at USC for his senior year.

That’s what he is going to say today, when he makes some sort of announcement at 1 p.m. I have been convinced of this, and still am.

Why I think Barkley is staying at USC — because he feels he owes it to USC. That’s right — it’s not because HE thinks he deserves the Heisman or the national championship. Barkley is doing this because he wants to contribute to the return of USC football to the top.

Barkley is not a me-first guy. That’s what I learned about him when he was at Mater Dei.

Cynics kept saying he would go to the NFL for the cash and the glory. That’s not Matt Barkley. And he is not staying at USC for Matt-first reasons — which most people are going to conclude.

To those who don’t believe me — you’re all a bunch of grinches!

Update: And…Fryer was right. Barkley staying for one more year.

Football: El Toro’s Manning on verge of breaking Barkley county record

November 29th, 2011, 11:14 am by

El Toro junior quarterback Conner Manning (6-2, 180) is on the verge of breaking Matt Barkley’s Orange County record for most passing yards in a season.

Manning enters Friday’s CIF Southwest Division semifinal showdown against La Habra with 3,472 yards, which is just 88 yards shy of Barkley’s 2007 record of 3,560 for Mater Dei.

Interestingly, Barkley also set the Orange County during a sensational junior season. Barkley would become the first non-senior to claim the Gatorade national player of the year award. Now at junior at USC, Barkley has earned consideration for this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Surprise! Mosqueda-Lewis wins Gatorade player of the year award (video)

March 17th, 2011, 3:56 pm by

Mater Dei’s Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis received the Gatorade National Player of the Year award for girls basketball on Thursday during a school assembly. Former WNBA star Lisa Leslie presented the award to her, and former Monarchs QB Matt Barkley (USC) was in attendance.

Mosqueda-Lewis has a chance to add more Gatorade hardware before the year is over. In July, she and the 12 other Gatorade national players of the year will convene in Hollywood for the announcement of the overall athletes of the year (one male, one female).

Mater Dei senior forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who has led the Monarchs within one victory of another state title game appearance, was selected 2010-11 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Mosqueda-Lewis received the award today at a ceremony at Mater Dei.

“This is a great honor,” Mosqueda-Lewis said after the presentation. “All of the great athletes that came before and received it are incredible athletes and are going to go down in history as some of the greatest to play any sport.

“I’m honored to win this award.”

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.

“She’s received a lot of awards this postseason, and personally I knew this one meant the most to her,” Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan said at the ceremony. “I’m proud she got the chance to experience this today.”

Fryer on Carroll-USC-Barkley-Corp

January 9th, 2010, 9:52 am by

football_blog6Just got off the phone with USC QB Matt Barkley’s father, Les, who is the standard for what the father of a big-time athlete should be (rightfully proud, but humble and appreciative).

I usually go through the parents and/or coach before bugging our young people about something major, like the eminent move of Pete Carroll from USC to the Seattle Seahawks.
