Girls water polo: Newport’s McCall, Mater Dei’s Silvers honored at USC

April 15th, 2013, 10:39 am by

Former Orange County water polo standouts Nina McCall (Newport Harbor) and Chelsea Silvers (Mater Dei) were honored by USC’s women’s water polo program during a Senior Day ceremony before the Trojans played host to Stanford on Saturday.

No. 2 Stanford handed No. 1 USC its first loss, 6-4, but Senior Day felt special for McCall, pictured middle with Silvers, left.

“It’s almost like another birthday — Senior Day,” she said afterward. “It’s cool being able to say that you’ve been on a collegiate, Division 1 team for four years, and you’re being honored for it, and people recognize it. It’s a big accomplishment.”

McCall helped USC’s second unit provide a spark against the Cardinal on Saturday. She has 50 career goals. Silvers has 42 career goals.

Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman confirmed Baron’s commitment Thursday morning.

As a three-year starter, Baron has helped Mater Dei claim three consecutive CIF-SS Division 1 titles.

Football recruiting: Mater Dei sophomore TE stands out at Rivals camp

March 26th, 2013, 1:41 pm by

Add Mater Dei tight end Kyle Penniston (6-5, 220) to the list of juniors to watch in the fall.

Penniston impressed earlier this month at the Rivals camp at El Toro. He was ranked the No. 9 offensive player from the camp, according to rivals.

With Mater Dei losing hybrid, tight end/wide receiver Thomas Duarte to UCLA, Penniston could emerge as an attractive target for quarterback Chase Forrest in 2013.

Penniston already has an offer from Florida State.
