This week I am picking the Top 5 Series of the Week. Here is one of them:
No. 4 Edison (15-3, 8-1) vs. No. 3 Marina (18-2, 8-1)
When: Wednesday at Marina; Friday at Edison
Outlook: First place is on the line when these two city rivals get together this week. Edison had a one-game lead but lost to Fountain Valley last week. Now, they’re tied.
It almost seems better this way, doesn’t it? Too bad this isn’t a four-game series.
Friday's Sunset League highlights:
Marina 2, Fountain Valley 1 (8 innings): The No. 4 Vikings (16-2, 6-1) won their eighth in a row when they scored the winning run on an eighth-inning error by the visiting Barons (8-9, 1-6).
Paul Strong pitched the first seven innings for Marina and allowed one run and five hits, but the victory went to Ken Stoops, who pitched the eighth.
Wednesday: Fountain Valley (8-7, 1-4) at No. 4 Marina (14-2, 4-1), 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: I think there could be quite a debate over who has the best pitching staff in the county?
Well, Marina certainly stated its case at the Darryl Kile Memorial Tournament last week. Marina allowed one run in four games.
You want more?
The Vikings allowed 10 hits in the four games. Simply amazing.
Here are the 6-10 teams in this week's O.C. Top 10, which is based on voting by members of the county media:
Ranking, School (League), Record, Points
6. Marina (Sunset) 10-2, 29
7. Dana Hills (South Coast) 7-3, 21
Another week of league play has passed and here are my picks for the noteworthy highlights:
Tuesday (March 31)
** Foothill scores eight runs on four hits in an 8-4 victory over Northwood.
** In the Pacific Coast League, Beckman smashes three home runs in an 11-3 victory over Laguna Hills. Ricky Navarro's three-run blast in the sixth gave the Patriots the lead for good.
** Marina scores 15 runs on 18 hits in a 15-5 victory over its Sunset League rival, Los Alamitos.
