Marina loses championship in heartbreaking fashion (video)

June 1st, 2013, 12:50 pm by

The Mariners had a chance to tie the CIF Division I championship game in the 7th inning, but Marina’s Tyler Mildenberg was tagged out at home in dramatic fashion.

Also, in a fun note. Harvard-Westlake’s baseball field was refurbished by the O’Malley family, who just so happened to own the Dodgers back in the day. Only fitting that the Wolverines’ first baseball championship was won at Chavez Ravine.

Another long drive for Cypress

May 25th, 2013, 10:15 am by

Cypress took a lengthy road trip to Oxnard for its CIF-Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal playoff game, which Cypress won, 9-0.

The Centurions hit the road again for the semifinals. They lost the coin flip that decided the home team for their Division 2 semifinal against Vista Murrieta. Cypress will journey 64 miles to play at Vista Murrieta High on Tuesday.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip identifies the home team.

The Division 1 semifinals doubleheader Tuesday at historic and charming Blair Field in Long Beach has Marina playing Loyola of Los Angeles at 4 p.m.  and Los Alamitos playing Harvard-Westlake at 7 p.m. Marina finished in second place and Los Alamitos was third in the Sunset League.

Capistrano Valley Christian is the home team for its Division 6 semifinal against Calvary Chapel of Downey. Capistrano Valley Christian has won its three playoff games by a combined score of 44-5, including an 18-0 road victory over Frazier Mountain of Lebec in the quarterfinals Friday. Calvary Chapel of Downey emerged from the wild-card round to reach the semifinals.

The CIF-SS semifinals schedule for games involving Orange County teams:

Division 1 at Blair Field (Long Beach) — Loyola vs. Marina, 4 p.m.; Los Alamitos vs. Harvard-Westlake, 7 p.m.

Division 2 — Cypress at Vista Murrieta, 3:15 p.m.

Division 6 — Calvary Chapel of Downey at Capistrano Valley Christian, 3:15 p.m.

May 8th, 2013, 8:53 pm by

Marina knew heading into their matchup with Fountain Valley that the Sunset League championship had been wrapped up, but that didn’t stop the Vikings from jumping all over the Barons’ pitching staff in a 8-5 victory.

Casey Hayes had three hits, including a home run.

Softball: Marina vs. Edison Live Blog Remix

May 2nd, 2013, 9:12 pm by

I did a live blog for The Bash at the Beach: Marina vs. Edison Part II on Thursday at Marina High. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM MARINA HIGH

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Marina High for The Bash at the Beach: Edison vs. Marina Part II.

The girls are doing pre-game warm-ups and D.J. Donnie Hagberg is blasting some Roger and Zapp “More Bounce to the Ounce.”Odalay, homie!

Marina hammered Edison, 10-0, in the first meeting. I’m expecting a much closer game this time around. Pride and Sunset League supremacy are on the line in this rematch. Edison comes in at 17-8 overall and 6-1 in league, while Marina is 21-3 and 6-1.

Marina has Michigan-commit Tera Blanco in the circle and Edison is throwing Utah-bound Sammy Cordova. Blanco is having one of the best seasons in her high school career. Cordova has been pitching with a bad ankle. She’s been battling all season.

No more messing around.

IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!

Edison, are you ready?

Marina, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!

Cal State Northridge-bound Carissa Sherman leads off the game with a single up the middle for Edison.

Marina ace Tera Blanco strikes out Notre Dame-bound Ali Wester with a rise ball. One down.

There goes Sherman for second and she’s … SAFE!!! Stolen base for Sherman. WILD PITCH!!! Sherman is on third.

Blanco is throwing gas. Pure heat. Notre Dame-bound Karley Wester is fighting off pitches. Full count. Wester is making Blanco work. Wester grounds out to second and that drives in Sherman from third to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Two down.

Idaho State-bound Reis Birkett draws a two-out walk and Utah Valley-bound Liz Talataina singles up the middle.

Blanco gets Isabella Stoner on a called third strike on the outside corner to end the inning.

Edison ace Sammy Cordova walks her cousin, Sam Agamaite, with one out in the bottom of the first.

BTW, OCVarsity videographer Jonathan Khamis is here shooting the game, so check out ocvarsity.com tonight for video highlights.
