Swim: University’s Burton commits to Pac-12 school

University High and Orange County Waves club swimmer Maggie Burton, the two-time defending CIF-SS Division 1 champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, has committed to UCLA, she said in a text message Monday night.

“I chose to be a Bruin because of the rich athletic tradition and great academics,” the senior said. “Coach Cyndi (Gallagher) and Coach Naya (Higashijima ) are really building a strong program that I want to be part of.”

Burton was a key member of the Trojans’ Division 1 team championship squads in 2011 and 2010. The All-County swimmer also is a strong sprint-freestyler (high school-best 23.72 seconds), individual medley racer and relay performer.

CIF Swim Central: Burton’s victory worth a second look

The championship season in swimming dishes out so many great swims in such a short amount of time, it sometimes takes me a bit to sort it all out. Here’s another great effort:

One of the best individual performances was turned in by University rising sophomore Maggie Burton.

At the Division 1 finals, she claimed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.69 — which missed breaking Melissa Bates’ county record for Mater Dei by only a tenth of a second. Burton now ranks third on the county’s all-time list in the breaststroke:
