Hytche breaks big run, MD goes up 14-7

November 13th, 2008, 9:19 pm by

A little bit of Matt Barkley and a big dose of jaron Hytche and Mater Dei takes a 14-7 lead over OLu with 8:45 left in the third.

Barkley tossed one out towards Christian Maldonado. OLu’s Blake Hugaert got a hand on it, but not enough and Maldonado made the catch for a 29-yard gain.

On the next play, Hytche broke a 53-yard run for a TD and the Monarchs have the lead.

El Do hangs on to beat Tustin, Newport-Los Al in nail-biter

November 13th, 2008, 9:02 pm by

Tustin RB Anthony Wilkerson got stopped by El Dorado on a big fourth down play in the third quarter, but that might have been the only time the Tillers star rusher has been stopped tonight.

Wilkerson just scored on a 3-yarder for Tustin to cut El Do’s lead to 28-21 with 8:14 to go. Wilkerson is up to 282 yards rushing.

Check that, Wilkerson can be stopped. Tustin went for it on 4th-and-3 from 27 and got stopped 1 yard short with 1:24 to go. That’s a wrap, El Do hangs on and wins 28-21 to take a share of the century League title with Tustin.

Is the “Sunset Doomsday Scenario” alive? Keep going to find out …

November 13th, 2008, 8:49 pm by

OLu came up with a huge 20-play, 80-yard “deadline-helping” drive that took over 7 minutes off the clock to tie Mater Dei, 7-7, in this Trinity League showdown for first place.

Keep going to get the details …

Take your update barrage like a man

November 13th, 2008, 8:40 pm by

In the Century League, El Dorado just came up with a huge defensive stop against Tustin.

Tustin went for it on fourth-and-4 from the El Do 5, but Tustin’s Anthony Wilkerson got stopped for a no gain by El Do’s Sinjian Hathoot and Ryan Cardenas. El Do leads 28-14 after three quarters.

Will the real Matt Barkley please stand up

November 13th, 2008, 8:20 pm by

I knew Mater Dei’s All-American stud QB Matt Barkley was bound to loosen up and get in a rhythm … and he just did.

Barkley threw a perfect spiral over the middle that his Ario Winston for a 45-yard gain.

A few plays later he hit his TE Chris Paliska for a 9-yard TD pass to give the Monarchs a 7-0 lead over OLu with 8:03 left in the first half.

OLu and MD deadlocked at zero after first

November 13th, 2008, 8:09 pm by

I was expecting to see some points put up on the board when I found out I was covering mater Dei and OLu this week.

But so far the defenses are coming up big for both teams. Matt Barkley has been a little shaky to start, but I expect him to get loose for the Monarchs.

OLu RB Kyle Dravis has looked to be on the verge of breaking some runs, but the MD defenders have made some great tackles to prevent him so far.

I got some updates … you know you want ‘em

November 13th, 2008, 8:03 pm by

In the Trinity League showdown between mater Dei and OLu, it’s tied 0-0 with 4:18 left in the first quarter. OLu just went for it on 4th-and-1 from the MD 47. The Monarchs dropped the Lancers for a 4-yard loss and take over near midfield.

Matt Barkley is 2 of 6 for 10 yards so far in this one. He’s throwing a lot of balls low and short-hopping his receivers.

Update barrage in full effect

November 13th, 2008, 7:53 pm by

Los Al turns a Newport turnover into a scoring drive to take a 14-7 lead over the Sailors with 8:40 left in the Sunset League. Cody Perez scored on a 2-yard TD run. Los Al kept the drive alive when Clark Evans completed an 18-yarder to Darryl Jenkins on 4th-and-10.

“Who does John Barnes think he is with these 4th-down tries? Myron Miller,” “Action” Dan says.

But Newport quickly recovered and  tied it, 14-14, on a 1-yard TD run by Ryan Andrews with 7:18 left in the half. J.B. Green set up the score with a 51-yard kick return.

“Not much defense here at Gahr,” “Action” Dan says.

El Do vs. Tustin is out of control

November 13th, 2008, 7:37 pm by

I just got an update from D.C. and he is back with another one.

“We’re having a scoring party,” D.C. says after El Do QB Kane Wilson just scrambled 24 yards for a TD to give the G-Hawks a 21-14 lead over Tustin with 8:23 left in the first half.

Tustin doesn’t want to give up share of Century

November 13th, 2008, 7:34 pm by

The Tillers aren’t ready to give up a share of the Century League title to El Do just yet.

And D.C. says Tustin’s Anthony Wilkerson is making a bid for All-County after breaking a 26-yard TD for his second TD of the game to tie it, 14-14, with El Dorado.

It’s the end of the first in that one.

We have updates

November 13th, 2008, 7:28 pm by

The Mater Dei-OLu game isn’t close to kickoff. It’s the Fox Sports Net game, so it probably won’t even start until 7:45 p.m. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have action heating up around the county. Damian Calhoun, a.k.a. D.C. of “The Calhoun Six” fame, and “Action” Dan Albano have some updates on two of their more intriguing games of the night.

First, from D.C. at the Tustin-El Dorado Century League game, the G-Hawks are up 14-7 with 2:42 left in the first.

‘Thursday Night Football Madness’ is hulking up

November 13th, 2008, 7:15 pm by

You are not going to like “Thursday Night Football Madness” when it gets angry. Or will you? Being a fan of the Incredible Hulk I say you will like this pumped of version of “Thursday Night Football Madness,” which is juicing on Gamma rays.

This is the biggest Thursday night of the season. League titles, playoff berths and pride are all on the line.

After a brutal nonleague run, El Dorado could earn a share of the Century League title if it can knock off Tustin.

Newport Harbor can take the first step in bringing about the “Sunset Doomsday Scenario” if it can upset Los Al.

In a monster Trinity League game, Mater Dei battles Orange Lutheran. Mr. FryDay Night himself Steve Fryer and I are out at Santa Ana Stadium for this one.

So it’s time to hulk up and let the madness … BEGIN!!!
