Why are they playing?

February 10th, 2012, 11:40 am by

No matter who wins or loses tonight’s Orange Lutheran-JSerra game at Irvine Valley College, a 7 p.m. game that decides who in the Trinity League finishes in third place — the league’s final guaranteed playoff berth — both teams will go to the playoffs. There will be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions, for JSerra in Division 4AA and Orange Lutheran in 1AA, and both are high enough in their divisional rankings to get an at-large berth (JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, OLu is No. 3 in 1A).

But the coaches, JSerra’s Joedy Gardner and Orange Lutheran’s Chris Nordstrom, don’t want to leave it to chance.

As Nordstrom said, “Weird things can happen. It would be difficult to face our players, their parents and people at our school if we somehow did not get into the playoffs because we decided to not play this game.”

A couple of third-place games today that really could matter:

Costa Mesa vs. Godinez at Calvary Chapel, Orange Coast League, 7 p.m.

Los Amigos vs. Santiago at Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove League, 4 p.m.

Orange Lutheran-JSerra third-place game

February 9th, 2012, 11:21 pm by

Orange Lutheran and JSerra will play Friday, at 7 p.m., at Irvine Valley College to decide which team gets the Trinity League’s third and final guaranteed playoff berth.

They are tied for third with 5-5 league records. While it is most likely that the Trinity League’s No. 4 team will get an at-large berth in the playoffs, JSerra coach Joedy Gardner and Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom don’t want to chance having a coin flip determine the No. 3 team and then perhaps the No. 4 still not getting in, as unlikely as that would seem. Lutheran is ranked No. 3 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1A, and JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, and there should be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions to accommodate them.

Los Amigos and Santiago play a Garden Grove League third-place playoff game Friday, too, at Bolsa Grande. Now, the loser of that one might be in danger of not qualifying for an at-large berth. That game could be a wild one.

Fryer on football: Los Amigos vs. Garden Grove

October 12th, 2011, 5:23 pm by

Garden Grove League
LOS AMIGOS (4-1, 0-0) VS. GARDEN GROVE (1-4, 0-0)

Fryer’s Southern Division vote

October 3rd, 2011, 12:15 pm by

Sportswriters are invited to vote in the CIF-Southern Section rankings of its 13 11-man football divisions. I only vote in the Pac-5, Southwest and Southern Divisions, per my choice as those are the divisions with which I have enough knowledge to make an informed vote.

Of course, I know some of you will say I should not vote on any divisions …

The Southern Division vote …
