Another long drive for Cypress

May 25th, 2013, 10:15 am by

Cypress took a lengthy road trip to Oxnard for its CIF-Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal playoff game, which Cypress won, 9-0.

The Centurions hit the road again for the semifinals. They lost the coin flip that decided the home team for their Division 2 semifinal against Vista Murrieta. Cypress will journey 64 miles to play at Vista Murrieta High on Tuesday.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip identifies the home team.

The Division 1 semifinals doubleheader Tuesday at historic and charming Blair Field in Long Beach has Marina playing Loyola of Los Angeles at 4 p.m.  and Los Alamitos playing Harvard-Westlake at 7 p.m. Marina finished in second place and Los Alamitos was third in the Sunset League.

Capistrano Valley Christian is the home team for its Division 6 semifinal against Calvary Chapel of Downey. Capistrano Valley Christian has won its three playoff games by a combined score of 44-5, including an 18-0 road victory over Frazier Mountain of Lebec in the quarterfinals Friday. Calvary Chapel of Downey emerged from the wild-card round to reach the semifinals.

The CIF-SS semifinals schedule for games involving Orange County teams:

Division 1 at Blair Field (Long Beach) — Loyola vs. Marina, 4 p.m.; Los Alamitos vs. Harvard-Westlake, 7 p.m.

Division 2 — Cypress at Vista Murrieta, 3:15 p.m.

Division 6 — Calvary Chapel of Downey at Capistrano Valley Christian, 3:15 p.m.

Girls water polo: Ex-Los Alamitos standout Fattal rallies UCLA at MPSF

April 26th, 2013, 8:54 pm by

College water polo highlights from Friday:

Freshman Rachel Fattal (Los Alamitos) — a two-time Register player of the year — scored twice in the fourth period, including the game-winner with 2:07 left, to rally UCLA women’s water polo team past host Cal, 4-3, in a key first round game at the MPSF championships Friday.

Not surprisingly, Fattal is having a super-season for UCLA. She was a heck of a complete player for the Griffins, and now, UCLA.

In another game, Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) scored five goals to help USC defeat Cal State Bakersfield, 21-5.

At the Big West tournament, host UC Irvine opened with an 8-5 victory against UC Davis.

Softball: Marina vs. Los Al Live Blog Remix

April 9th, 2013, 9:02 pm by

I did a live blog from the Sunset League opener between Marina and Los Alamitos on Tuesday at Marina High. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM MARINA HIGH

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Marina High for the Sunset League opener between No. 10 Los Alamitos (12-9, 0-0) and No. 7 Marina (13-2, 0-0).

Marina is coming off a 2-0 loss to El Modena in the quarterfinals of the Woodbridge Tournament on Monday night at Barber Park.

Los Al finished fourth in the Michelle Carew Classic last week at Peralta Park. The Griffins outslugged Poway, Woodcreek of Roseville and El Toro before losing to Yorba Linda and Orange Lutheran on Saturday.

The Griffins were left with a very young and inexperienced pitching staff after Alex and Andie Formby transferred to Mater Dei. But Los Al boasts one of the best offensive lineups in the county led by Tennessee-bound Megan Geer, Pacific-commit Rachel Sellers, Indiana State-bound Erika Crissman, LMU-bound Alex Finnie. So Los Al’s game plan this season is to outscore everyone it faces.

Marina is led by Michigan-commit Tera Blanco, who is pitching at the top of her game this season after pitching with a nagging back injury throughout her sophomore season. Utah-bound catcher Bella Secaira has been strong leader for the Vikings this season Blanco and Secaira are teammates on the Firecrackers. UNLV-bound 3B Sam Agamaite and sophomore SS Sydney McCollum have also been bright spots for the Vikings.

Los Al swept the season series from Marina, 6-5 and 9-4, last season. I’m sure Marina will be looking for some payback.

Stay tuned for all the updates. First pitch is 3:15 p.m.

Baseball: Fryer’s top 10 vote

March 11th, 2013, 12:45 pm by

The first top 10 vote of the season is difficult in any sport, but especially so for baseball. Teams beat better teams because the better team went with its No. 4 starting pitcher, or brought up a JV guy who won’t pitch in a varsity league game, etc.

But here it goes — first top 10 vote of this baseball season …
