Girls soccer: No. 10 Edison vs. Los Alamitos (breakdown)

Audrey Minar (15) and Sierra Krenik (16) combined for the winning play in the teams first meeting on January 19th.

Here is a quick breakdown of Thursday’s Sunset League showdown between No. 10 Edison and Los Alamitos.

 

No. 10 Edison Chargers (15-5-3, 6-1-2) at Los Alamitos Griffins (11-5-6, 6-1-2)

Where and When: Laurel School in Los Alamitos, 3 p.m.

What’s at Stake: The Sunset League Championship (Both teams are tied for the lead heading into the final match of the regular season.)

Season series: (Edison leads season series 1-0)

Water polo: Newport wins SoCal Champs, places three on all-tourney (update)

Newport Harbor’s girls water polo team turned in a strong defensive effort Saturday to capture the Irvine SoCal Championships with a 6-5 victory against Corona del Mar in the final.

The Lady Sailors held Corona del Mar scoreless for the final 5:17 of the third period and the first 5:22 of the fourth en route to their first victory against the Sea Queens in four tries this season.

Newport Harbor also captured the prestigious, 32-team tournament for the first time since 2008  and the second time in school history.

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar captures Santa Barbara TOC

SANTA BARBARA Corona del Mar’s girls water polo team didn’t have the strongest starts Saturday at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

But no squad finished stronger than the Sea Queens. Diana Murphy and Cassidy Papa each scored three goals to help rally Corona del Mar past Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the final, 10-8, at Santa Barbara.

The Sea Queens trailed, 4-0, before storming to their third victory against the Lady Sailors in as many tries this winter.

Boys basketball: Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase today at Villa Park

All of the games will be played at Villa Park High today, and all five games are good matchups:

Edison vs. Redondo Union, 2 p.m.; Canyon vs. Huntington Beach, 3:30 p.m.; Palm Springs vs. Gahr of Cerritos, 5 p.m.; Villa Park vs. Los Alamitos, 6:30 p.m.; Mission Viejo vs. Victor Valley, 8 p.m.

Admission, which is good for as many games as you want to see: $11 for adults, $6 for students with student ID, and $3 for children 13 and younger. All proceeds go to local cancer care facilities.

 

 

Girls water polo: All-Orange County semifinals set at Santa Barbara TOC

Orange County girls water polo has claimed all four spots for Saturday’s semifinals at the Santa Barbara TOC.

In the first semifinal at 11:10 a.m., No. 1 Foothill will take on No. 3 Newport Harbor. And at 12:15 p.m., seventh-seed Los Alamitos will play No. 2-ranked Corona del Mar.

Los Al and Newport each won quarterfinals Friday in sudden-death overtime to advance to the semifinals. The Griffins edged Santa Barbara, 10-9, while Newport slipped past Laguna Beach, 7-6.

The final Saturday is set for 4:35 p.m. at Santa Barbara.

Girls water polo: Who will capture the Santa Barbara TOC?

The Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions – the second, and sometimes, the most entertaining, major Division 1 girls water polo tournament of the regular season — begins Friday. The tournament will assemble another talented 16 teams — including O.C. No. 1 Foothill, left — but only one team will emerge as the champion.
