What happened in the Excalibur Tournament on Tuesday: Esperanza and Long Beach Wilson ended regulation tied, 0-0, in a quarterfinals match at Foothill High.

The Aztecs won in penalty kicks, 4-1, to move on to the semifinals. Two weeks ago in the Aliso Cup final, Wilson lost to the Aztecs on PK's after tying, 1-1.

How it looked: Esperanza did a good job of neutralizing Wilson's forward combo of Emily Dillon and Kristyn Benavidez. The pair is quick and works well together.

As for the game, here's what Aztecs coach John King said: "I thought it should have been 2-2. Neither team could capitalize."

Penalty kicks: Kylie Bono made the Aztecs' first kick and Dillon made the Bears' first.

Wilson missed its next two kicks, one blocked by goalie Lacie Carver.

Ashleigh Cooley, Courtney Garcia and Erika Mazeau also made their kicks for the Aztecs.

Close calls: Dillon crossed the ball in front of net, where Benavidez's chip shot just missed wide.

Bono had a header moments later that sailed just over the crossbar.

With time running down in the first half, Dillon ripped a shot and Carver made a diving save. On the ensuing corner, Wilson took another crack, but Carver made the save.

About 15 minutes into the second half, the ball was loose in front of the Aztecs goal. Wilson's Kaitlin Hellmann hit it solid, but missed it high.

With less than 10 minutes to play, the Aztecs had a loose ball in front of the Bears goal. Alicia Wagner struck the ball through the crowd.

"I was running down the sideline cheering," King said.

But the ball somehow stayed out. Goalie Carly Farris' fingertips were just long enough for the save.

High-five to ...: The Aztecs. They are 11-0 and in the hunt for their first Excalibur championship.

"You look at the history of this tournament and there's one team missing from the list of winners," King said. "I'm excited to be playing for the title still. In years past, this was about the round it ended for us."

Saturday's match

Division II quarterfinals

Riverside Poly (19-9) vs. Long Beach Wilson (15-12) at Long Beach State, 3 p.m.

Prediction: Belmont Plaza isn't available for this tilt but Long Beach State gives me an old-school feel for this match. The Bruins will create a little magic in the first Division II voyage and will upset fourth-seeded Poly in overtime. LBW has the speed on the counterattack to get some high percentage shots on RSP goalie Gavyn Wild. RSP won the teams' earlier encounter, 13-12, but the Bruins book a semifinal date with Mater Dei and former Long Beach State star Chris Segesman.

Thursday

Division II second round

El Modena (23-6) vs. Long Beach Wilson (14-12) at Belmont Plaza, 3:15 p.m.

Prediction: The Vanguards earned the first playoff in their school history Tuesday but still feel they are seeking respect. While some fans on the blogs have not given El Modena the respect it is due, a tight score against the fifth-seeded Bruins should help. Moore League champ Long Beach Wilson, the former Division I juggernaut, wins the match but if the up-and-coming Vanguards bring their A-game and Erich Schwamb catches fires, they can make it close.
