Spalding’s last game

December 16th, 2011, 9:10 am by

When Santa Margarita plays Bellarmine of San Jose in the CIF State Bowl Championships Division 1 game tonight at Home Depot Center in Carson, it will be the the final game in which Santa Margarita offensive line coach Marty Spalding will coach.

Spalding, 65, is retiring from coaching. He has been a football coach for 40 years, mostly as an assistant coach working with linemen. He is nationally known as an outstanding coach of linemen.

Spalding has nine CIF championship rings won at four different schools — El Toro, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita.

He said he would pitch in at Santa Margarita if Eagles coach Harry Welch asked him to do so. “The day-to-day thing is over for me,” Spalding said. “But if Harry needs me, I’ll come running.”

Spalding and wife Pam are going to spend a great deal of time traveling the globe. He also loves working on his cars and motorcycles, and is a voracious reader.

Welch’s assessment of Spalding: “It all starts with what I have seen as being the most prepared coach of any coach I have known in my 40 years of coaching. He follows that preparation with unbelievable organization. He is an inspiration to all all coaches, the old-timers and the neophytes.”

Marty Spalding. There goes one of the all-time greats, folks.

At-large teams

November 13th, 2011, 8:06 am by

Southwest Division — Laguna Hills (Sea View League, 7-2 overall record); Sonora (Freeway, 4-6).

Southern Division — Godinez (Orange Coast, 5-5).

As there was only one at-large candidate in the Southwest Division with a record of .500 or better, the CIF-Southern Section had to go to the next-best records group. So Sonora, at 4-6, is in.

In the Southern Division, Savanna also was 5-5 — but Savanna is a No. 5 team (from the Orange League) and Godinez is a No. 4 (from the Orange Coast League). As the formatting rules go, a No. 5 cannot be taken ahead of a No. 4.

Football: At-large contenders for the playoffs

November 12th, 2011, 12:33 pm by

Teams that do not finish high enough in their final league standings for the automatic playoff berths can qualify for at-large berths in some divisions.

The Southwest Division has two at-large berths and the Southern Division has one. There are no at-large berths in the Pac-5 Division.

To be eligible for at-large berth consideration, a team must have a final overall record of .500 or better. Lacking enough .500 teams to fill the at-large berths, the CIF-Southern Section then considers teams with the next-best records.

Here are Orange County’s at-large berth contenders …

Fryer’s Southwest Division vote

October 3rd, 2011, 12:11 pm by

Sportswriters are invited to vote in the CIF-Southern Section rankings of its 13 11-man football divisions. I only vote in the Pac-5, Southwest and Southern Divisions, per my choice as those are the divisions with which I have enough knowledge to make an informed vote.

Of course, I know some of you will say I should not vote on any divisions …

The Southwest Division vote …
