Boys water polo: Laguna Beach announces its college-bound seniors

Laguna Beach boys water polo coach Ethan Damato has announced the Breakers’ class of college-bound seniors.

Here’s the list of committed players who helped Laguna Beach reach the CIF Division 2 semifinals this past season:

Riley Thomas, committed to Air Force (Second-team All-County)

Camron Hauer, committed to Cal Lutheran

Maxx McCarter, GK, committed to Cal

Caleb Scott, committed to Pepperdine

Duncan Lynde, committed to Long Beach State.

“I’m happy to report that all five are committed and playing water polo next fall,” Damato said in an e-mail.

Football recruiting: Laguna Beach receiver heading to Ivy League

Laguna Beach wide receiver Robert Clemons (5-11, 172) has committed to Yale, former Breakers football coach Mike Churchill reports.

Clemons had 41 catches for 481 yards and also rushed for429 yards in 2012.

Football recruiting: Laguna Beach’s Martinez reportedly commits

Laguna Beach All-County football player Drake Martinez (6-2, 200) has reportedly committed to Nebraska, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Martinez, a defensive back/running back, becomes the second county player to commit to the Cornhuskers, joining Santa Margarita quarterback Johnny Stanton.

Drake is the brother of Nebraska quarterback, Taylor Martinez.

Drake Martinez made official recruiting trips to Nebraska and Michigan State.

Football recruiting: Laguna Beach’s Martinez lands another Big Ten offer

Laguna Beach’s Drake Martinez

Laguna Beach All-County football player Drake Martinez, coming off a strong performance at Monday’s The Canyon-Coast Classic in Riverside, has been offered by Michigan State, the senior said in a text message Wednesday.

Martinez said the Spartans are recruiting him to play running back/safety and that he will take an official visit to the Big Ten school.

He also has made an official visit Nebraska. His brother, Taylor, is the Huskers’ starting quarterback.

Water polo recruiting: Laguna Beach defender picks East Coast power

Laguna Beach water polo defender Sydney Saxe, a co-captain and three-year varsity starter, has committed to Princeton, Breakers coach Ethan Damato announced.

Saxe is one of the top defenders in the county but also netted 30 goals last season for the Division 1 contenders. She also plays for the powerful SET club.

Last season, Princeton reached the NCAA tournament, finishing sixth en route to a 29-win season.

The Tigers’ recruiting highlights from the class of 2012 included All-County center Diana Murphy of Corona del Mar and goalie Ashleigh Johnson from Florida.

Girls water polo: Laguna Beach’s Del Toro commits to Harvard

Laguna Beach water polo player Lexi Del Toro, a four-year varsity player and captain, has committed to Harvard, Breakers girls coach Ethan Damato reports.

Del Toro, pictured left with Damato, helped the Breakers reach the CIF Division 1 semifinals last season, where they fell to eventual champion Newport Harbor, 7-6, in overtime.

The attacker finished the season with 50 goals, 36 assists and 40 steals.

“One of the smartest players I have ever coached,” Damato said of Del Toro in a text message.

At Harvard, Del Toro will reunite with Laguna Beach teammate Yoshi Andersen, a first-team All-County pick last season.

Football: Churchill steps aside at Laguna Beach

Mike Churchill has resigned as football coach at Laguna Beach and has been replaced by Corey Brown. Brown has been an assistant coach in the Laguna Beach football program.

Churchill, 67, who will continue to serve as the school’s athletic director, coached the Breakers the past two seasons. The team advanced to the Southern Division semifinals both years. His teams were 21-4-1 over the two-year period.

Girls water polo: No. 4 Laguna Beach falls to Division 2 champs

Sophomore Brighid Burnes scored three goals and Mackenzie Baldridge and Lexie Del Toro each scored twice but Laguna Beach’s No. 4 girls water polo team fell at reigning Division 2 champion Santiago of Corona, 9-8, on Wednesday.

Laguna Beach played without center Makenezie Fischer, who is at the World youth championships in Perth, Australia.

“I thought the girls played really hard and it was a solid learning experience for a young group,” Laguna Beach coach Ethan Damato said in a text message.

Boys water polo: Laguna Beach-Santa Barbara preview

DIVISION 2

LAGUNA BEACH (21-9) VS. SANTA BARBARA (21-8)

Site, time: William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, Irvine, 5 p.m.

Outlook: The third-seeded Breakers captured the past two Division 3 titles before moving up to Division 2. Second-seeded Santa Barbara arrived in Division 2 after dropping from Division 1. The Dons had lost three consecutive first-round matches in Division 1 after reaching the Division 1 semifinals in 2008. In September, Santa Barbara defeated Laguna Beach, 10-7, at the South Coast Tournament.
