La Quinta out of playoffs

May 14th, 2012, 9:17 am by

La Quinta forfeited some victories, thus pushing the Aztecs to the lower half of the Garden Grove League standings and giving them a sub-.500 overall record. La Quinta would have been the No. 3 team in the league and in the playoffs without the forfeitures.

The Garden Grove League information on baseball submitted to the CIF-Southern Section had La Quinta 6-16 overall and 4-11 in league. Before the forfeitures, La Quinta was listed as finishing 10-12 overall and in third place in the league at 8-7.

La Quinta will miss the playoffs for the first time since the early 1990s. The reason for the forfeitures has not been disclosed. We have left voice messages with La Quinta athletic director Ron Vander Sluis and baseball coach Kevin Wason (longtime coach Dave Demarest retired after the 2007 season; Wason is the third La Quinta coach in as many years).

The Garden Grove League playoff representatives: 1. Rancho Alamitos; 2. Garden Grove; 3. Los Amigos.

Baseball playoff brackets will be at ocvarsity.com early this afternoon.

La Quinta has five alums in MLB (updated)

July 18th, 2011, 3:03 pm by

Brandon Laird was called up by the New York Yankees today, making him the fifth former La Quinta athlete on a Major League Baseball roster today.

The other five ex-Aztecs in the bigs — Cole Garner (Colorado, OF); Ian Kennedy (Arizona, P); Gerald Laird (St. Louis, C, Brandon’s older brother); and Ian Stewart (Colorado, Inf).

Four of the five — Garner, Kennedy, Gerald Laird and Stewart — were on the 2003 La Quinta team that won the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 championship. On July 8, those four ex-Aztecs were in the starting lineups MLB games. “That was pretty exciting,” said Dave Demarest, whose 34 years of coaching La Quinta baseball ended in 2007 with a county-record 753 victories.

Canyon-Marina, and more, ppd

Just too much mud to deal with there, from a steady rain out there in HB that went much of last night. That was a Div 1 wild-card game, at Marina. So Canyon-Marina rescheduled for Wed. at 3:15 p.m.

Also — Div 3 wild-card: Warren of Downey-La Quinta postponed, too, until Wed. at 3:15 p.m. at LQ.; Estancia-Anaheim, ppd to Wed. at 7 p.m. at Glover Stadium/Dee Fee Field.

We are checking on others.
