Football: At-large contenders for the playoffs

November 12th, 2011, 12:33 pm by

Teams that do not finish high enough in their final league standings for the automatic playoff berths can qualify for at-large berths in some divisions.

The Southwest Division has two at-large berths and the Southern Division has one. There are no at-large berths in the Pac-5 Division.

To be eligible for at-large berth consideration, a team must have a final overall record of .500 or better. Lacking enough .500 teams to fill the at-large berths, the CIF-Southern Section then considers teams with the next-best records.

Here are Orange County’s at-large berth contenders …

Fryer on football: Savanna vs. Katella

October 12th, 2011, 5:16 pm by

Orange League
SAVANNA (3-2, 0-0) VS. KATELLA (3-2, 0-0)
Where, when: Glover Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Let’s first salute two of the county’s better coaches, dedicated veteran guys who always get the most out of their rosters, Savanna’s Roger Whalen and Katella’s Fred DiPalma. Their teams are not going to get on TV, and they are not going to see their teams highlighted in the county top 10. But they continue to serve and serve well.

Fryer on football: Buena Park vs. Katella

October 5th, 2011, 4:24 pm by

BUENA PARK (3-1) VS. KATELLA (3-1)
Where, when: Glover Stadium, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Not many would have predicted these two would be 3-1 after four games. But here they are, two long-struggling programs thriving in the nonleague portion of their schedule with the potential to finish high enough in league to qualify for the playoffs. Buena Park handed Costa Mesa its only loss, and also has beaten Garden Grove League lower-strata teams Bolsa Grande and La Quinta. The Coyotes lost to 3-1 Estancia by three points.

Fryer’s Southern Division vote

October 3rd, 2011, 12:15 pm by

Sportswriters are invited to vote in the CIF-Southern Section rankings of its 13 11-man football divisions. I only vote in the Pac-5, Southwest and Southern Divisions, per my choice as those are the divisions with which I have enough knowledge to make an informed vote.

Of course, I know some of you will say I should not vote on any divisions …

The Southern Division vote …

Girls water polo: Katella holds off Savanna in play-in match

February 11th, 2011, 10:08 pm by

Senior Christina Almazan scored four goals and goalie Jill Prieto made eight saves to lead Katella’s girls water polo team past Savanna, 9-7, in a one-game playoff Friday night at Kennedy for second place in the four-team Orange League.

Katella (14-14, 4-3) and Savanna (12-15, 3-4) were ranked in the latest Division 7 Top 10 poll but each needed to win Friday to be eligible for the playoffs because their overall records were under .500 entering the day. Teams need to be at least .500 to apply for an at-large berth in the playoffs.

“It was pretty much a do-or-die situation,” Katella coach Ron Cunningham said.

Savanna cut Katella’s lead to 8-7 in the fourth period but the Knights added another score to reach the playoffs for the first time under Cunningham, in his fifth season.
