Why are they playing?

February 10th, 2012, 11:40 am by

No matter who wins or loses tonight’s Orange Lutheran-JSerra game at Irvine Valley College, a 7 p.m. game that decides who in the Trinity League finishes in third place — the league’s final guaranteed playoff berth — both teams will go to the playoffs. There will be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions, for JSerra in Division 4AA and Orange Lutheran in 1AA, and both are high enough in their divisional rankings to get an at-large berth (JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, OLu is No. 3 in 1A).

But the coaches, JSerra’s Joedy Gardner and Orange Lutheran’s Chris Nordstrom, don’t want to leave it to chance.

As Nordstrom said, “Weird things can happen. It would be difficult to face our players, their parents and people at our school if we somehow did not get into the playoffs because we decided to not play this game.”

A couple of third-place games today that really could matter:

Costa Mesa vs. Godinez at Calvary Chapel, Orange Coast League, 7 p.m.

Los Amigos vs. Santiago at Bolsa Grande, Garden Grove League, 4 p.m.

Orange Lutheran-JSerra third-place game

February 9th, 2012, 11:21 pm by

Orange Lutheran and JSerra will play Friday, at 7 p.m., at Irvine Valley College to decide which team gets the Trinity League’s third and final guaranteed playoff berth.

They are tied for third with 5-5 league records. While it is most likely that the Trinity League’s No. 4 team will get an at-large berth in the playoffs, JSerra coach Joedy Gardner and Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom don’t want to chance having a coin flip determine the No. 3 team and then perhaps the No. 4 still not getting in, as unlikely as that would seem. Lutheran is ranked No. 3 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1A, and JSerra is No. 11 in 4AA, and there should be plenty of at-large berths in their divisions to accommodate them.

Los Amigos and Santiago play a Garden Grove League third-place playoff game Friday, too, at Bolsa Grande. Now, the loser of that one might be in danger of not qualifying for an at-large berth. That game could be a wild one.

Fryer’s top 10 vote

An interesting week for the vote … last week, Ocean View beat Mission Viejo; Orange Lutheran lost twice, yes, but to the top two teams in the state rankings (Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly) …

My vote, one of six that are used to compile the top 10, went like this today …

Football recruiting: Decision for JSerra standout going down to wire

February 1st, 2012, 8:04 am by

JSerra defensive back/wide receiver Jonavaughn Williams – Orange County’s No. 2 uncommitted player heading into National Signing Day – reported late Tuesday night – that he would sign today with UNLV unless …

“Something happens late hour” Williams said in a text.

Williams made an official recruiting trip to UNLV over the weekend. The Rebels also offered JSerra quarterback Jake Hall, so UNLV could land an excellent county combination today.

How I voted this week on the Orange County boys basketball top 10. There are six voters on the panel. My vote is not the final top 10.

1. Mater Dei (19-2 overall, 6-0 league … better than last year? Looks that way)

Football recruiting: JSerra’s Williams visiting UNLV this weekend

January 28th, 2012, 2:04 pm by

JSerra wide receiver/cornerback Jonavaughn Williams (6-0, 192) is on a recruiting trip to UNLV this weekend, the senior said in a text message Saturday.

Williams also has visited Colorado and San Diego State. He is Orange County’s second-highest ranked uncommitted recruit behind San Clemente offensive lineman Kyle Murphy.

Interestingly, uncommitted JSerra quarterback Jake Hall made a recruiting trip to UNLV earlier this month.

Football recruiting: JSerra’s Hall on Washington State’s radar

January 9th, 2012, 1:02 pm by

JSerra senior quarterback Jake Hall (6-5, 195), who plays Thursday night in the inaugural Catholic Christian Literacy Classic at Whittier College, is receiving recruiting interest from Washington State.

New Cougars coach Mike Leach watched Hall throw last week at JSerra.

Hall has been offered by UNLV. Washington State recently landed a commitment from La Habra wide receiver Brett Bartolone.

Fryer’s top 10 vote

January 9th, 2012, 10:48 am by

How I voted in this week’s Orange County boys basketball media poll … and there are some teams with some semi-odd losses, but that will happen during a long season …

1. Mater Dei (13-2 overall, 1-0 league) … MD lost to Gill St. Bernard of New Jersey, No. 3 team in NJ.

2. Capistrano Valley (15-2, 2-0) … beat El Toro, and looked good doing so.

3. Mission Viejo (15-1, 1-0) … maybe this should be No. 3, over Capo? MV’s only loss was to Mater Dei.

4. JSerra (10-4, 1-1) … big jump for the Lions, thanks in part to losses by other top 10 teams; JS lost to SJ Bosco last week, but that’s a very good team.

5. Orange Lutheran (12-2, 2-0) … York’s absence (appendectomy) really hurts these Lancers.

6. Ocean View (12-3, 1-0) … getting semi-overdue respect from the voters this week.

7.  Edison (14-2, 2-0) … beat Newport Harbor, lost to an 8-7 Torrance team.

8. El Toro (14-4, 0-1) … just a cold shooting night for Chargers vs. CV, but CV is a very good defensive club.

9. Foothill (14-3, 2-1) … lost to Esperanza, but feeling here is that Foothill beats Esperanza in the rematch.

10. Aliso Niguel (13-5, 2-0) … could go undefeated in Sea View League.

Considered — Canyon, Cypress, Esperanza, Tustin, Sunny Hills, La Habra, Dana Hills, Huntington Beach, Santa Margarita.
