Football: Los Alamitos’ Barnes approaching another milestone

Los Alamitos football coach John Barnes will enter the 2012 season just five victories away from 300 for his career, a feat only three coaches in the state have accomplished.

Barnes, 63, has an Orange County-record 295 career victories. He has won 293 games in 33 seasons with the Griffins. He also won two games with Magnolia before his tenure at Los Alamitos, which started with the 1979 season.

Barnes said approaching the milestone makes him feel proud of his players and assistant coaches over the years.

“You don’t win without great players and great coaches,” he said between the Griffins practices Monday.

Los Alamitos coach John Barnes confirmed four Griffins signed national letters of intent Wednesday:

DB Terrance Brown – Northwestern
QB Dylan Lagarde – Bryant (Rhode Island, FCS)
WR/DB Kyle Roberts – Sacramento State (FCS)
RB Cody Paul – Chadron State (Nebraska, D-II … the next Danny Woodhead?)

Los Al’s Barnes retires from teaching, not coaching

Where, when: Saddleback College, Saturday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Los Alamitos senior running back Nick Richardson was on his way to a county player of the year type of season before suffering a foot fracture two weeks ago. The Griffins did not have him for last week’s road loss to Valley Center of San Diego, and also out is linebacker Joe Locher (broken ankle), whom Los Al coach John Barnes called “the heart and soul of our defense.”

Calhoun’s Games to Watch: Los Alamitos vs. Long Beach Poly

Friday, 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium

Outlook: There is always that one first-round matchup that can pretty much write itself.

Last year, it was the Father and Son meeting between John Barnes (Los Alamitos) and Brian Barnes (Tesoro). This year’s winner is this one: The Jackrabbits against the Griffins … otherwise known as the Dylan Lagarde Bowl.
