Football: St. John Bosco running back DaVonte Young enrolls at Tustin

May 14th, 2012, 11:19 am by

Much-traveled but talented St. John Bosco running back DaVonte Young (5-10, 180) has enrolled at Tustin, Tillers football coach Myron Miller said Monday.

Young is coming off a strong junior season with the Pac-5 Braves, who he helped reach the Pac-5 Division quarterfinals. St. John Bosco (8-4), the third-place team from the Trinity League, fell to San Clemente in the playoffs.

Young finished with 1,035 yards, including 166 against San Clemente.

Young burst onto the Orange County scene as starting freshman running back at Irvine. But he left Irvine after the 2009 season, transferring to Tustin. Young was denied athletic eligibility at Tustin and transferred to St. John Bosco, where he sat out his sophomore season.

As a junior, he showed improved speed, power and ability to run between the tackles. Scout.com reports that Young has been offered by Arizona.

At Tustin, he could join a backfield that already includes standout Terence Martinez. Young’s eligibly status to play at Tustin is unclear.

The run-oriented Tillers won the CIF-SS Southwest Division title in 2011.

We’re covering …

May 10th, 2012, 12:54 pm by

Pacifica at Cypress (Fryer; teams tied for 1st in Empire)

Los Alamitos at Edison (Adam Maya; Los Al in first in Sunset, Edison fighting for playoff berth)

Irvine at Beckman (Tim “The Mayor Of Irvine” Burt; Kaprielian is pitching for Beckman. It’s like when Nolan Ryan pitched for the Angels — you had to go, because you just might see something special).

We would love to cover about five or six other baseball games today, the final day of the regular season. But with volleyball playoffs (Damian Calhoun all over it), softball (Carlos Arias, firing up the ocvarsity.com blog from Los Al-Edison), CIF swimming finals (Dan Albano tweeting everything from there all day long), etc. there is a lot going on!

Pacific Coast League out of Southern Division

April 4th, 2012, 3:10 pm by

The Golden West League’s appeal to have the Pacific Coast League removed from the Southern Division for football playoffs was approved by an appeals panel today at the CIF-Southern Section office.

CIF-SS spokesman Thom Simmons said CIF-SS assistant commissioner Glen Martinez, in charge of the section’s management of football, now has to produce playoff groupings for football different from the ones he had created.

In the 2011 Southern Division playoffs, the two finalists were PCL teams, Beckman and Corona del Mar. In 2010, three of the four semifinalists were PCL teams.

Where does the PCL go for football, now? The Southwest Division, for which it looked like the Sunset League was headed? And does this mean the Sunset stays in the Pac-5 Division so the PCL can go to the Southwest? Does the Southern Division get a replacement for the PCL, or will the Southern Division be a four-league (Garden Grove, Golden West, Orange and Orange Coast) division?

Southwest Division league representatives are to meet at Brea Olinda HS on Thursday to discuss their next move.

It looks like nothing will be decided until the April 26 CIF-SS Council meeting.
