Luke Gane was diagnosed with aplastic anemia before the 2008 season. He underwent chemotherapy and needed a bone marrow transplant. It turned out that one of his twin brothers was the correct match. Huntington Beach survived a near-heartbreaking finish Tuesday to reach the CIF-SS Division II championship game.
The Oilers entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a six-run lead, but Chino Hills hit two home runs with two outs and cut the lead to one run.
It's been an eventful week thus far for the Oilers senior libero.
Charlie Condron helped his team inch closer to the share of the league title with Tuesday's victory over Foothill.
What happened: Huntington Beach can clinch a share of the Sea View League title with a victory in its league finale after surviving a five-game slugfest with Foothill, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 15-11, on Tuesday night at FHS.
Wednesday: Huntington Beach (8-6, 3-2) at No. 9 Foothill (11-4, 3-2), 3:15 p.m.
Outlook: Second place in the Sea View League will be on the line this week. The teams will also play Friday at Huntington Beach. The Oilers won the first meeting, 6-4, on March 20.
Sean Guite, Michael Chairez, Blake Cestr, Jon Combest and Jake Porter all had two hits for the Oilers. Eduardo Diaz had three hits for the Knights.
