Huntington Beach rallies to CIF championship (video)

The Oilers found themselves down 2-1 in the Division I CIF champinship to Loyola of L.A., but Huntington Beach rallied to win their first CIF boys volleyball title in 20 years.

Girls water polo: Huntington Beach’s Anderson resigns

Huntington Beach girls water polo coach Brian Anderson has resigned after four seasons, he confirmed.

Anderson said he will continue to coach Huntington Beach’s boys water polo team, a potential top-10 squad in the county come the fall.

“I just got tired,” he said over the weekend. “It’s time to take the winter time to myself.”

Baseball playoffs: O.C. at-large teams

These Orange County teams qualified as at-large teams …

Division 1 — Huntington Beach, Servite, Mission Viejo (fyi, Brea Olinda qualified automatically as the Century League’s No. 4 team, did not go in as at-large although league coaches indicated that would happen).

Division 2 — Yorba Linda, Laguna Hills.

Division 4 — Godinez.

Water polo recruiting: Huntington Beach’s Jeremic headed East

Huntington Beach boys water polo standout Jovan Jeremic has committed to Princeton, Oilers boys coach Brian Anderson reports.

The senior finished last season with 103 goals and earned second-team All-County honors.

Jeremic, an attacker, is from Belgrade, Serbia. He played basketball before committing full-time to water polo.

Jeremic has been playing club recently for Corona del Mar gray, an all-star type team that is being coach by Olympian Ryan Bailey.

Football recruiting: Huntington Beach defensive end picks NAIA school

Huntington Beach defensive end John Vis (6-2, 245) has signed with NAIA Menlo College in Northern California, Oilers football coach Eric Lo reports.

Menlo is the only NAIA program in the state.

Baseball: Fryer’s top 10 vote

The first top 10 vote of the season is difficult in any sport, but especially so for baseball. Teams beat better teams because the better team went with its No. 4 starting pitcher, or brought up a JV guy who won’t pitch in a varsity league game, etc.

But here it goes — first top 10 vote of this baseball season …

Football recruiting: Huntington Beach lineman commits to Air Force

Huntington Beach offensive lineman Adam Khouri (6-3, 275) has committed to Air Force, Oilers football coach Eric Lo reports.

The senior was a second-team All-County pick this past season.

Khouri also had an offer from FCS San Diego.

Football recruiting: Huntington Beach lineman lands Mountain West offer

Huntington Beach senior offensive lineman Adam Khouri (6-3, 275) has been offered by Air Force, his father, Jeff, reports.

The Falcons made an in-home visit with the second-team All-County selection on Monday.

Khouri also has an offer FCS San Diego.

Girls water polo: Huntington Beach’s Preston, Lambur pick colleges

Huntington Beach girls water polo players Sam Preston and Hana Lambur have made college decisions, Oilers coach Brian Anderson reports.

Sam Preston, pictured left, has committed to UC Davis while Lambur has committed to San Diego State.

Preston, an attacker, racked up 91 goals, 58 assists and 50 steals last season for Huntington Beach. She also was first-team All-Sunset League. She also scored 15 goals in four games at the recent Holiday Cup.

Boys water polo: Mater Dei claims top frosh-soph tourney

Mater Dei’s frosh-soph boys water polo team claimed the Newport Harbor-hosted Gray Lunde invitational on Saturday.

Huntington Beach took the silver while the Sailors took third.

Water polo: Ex-Huntington Beach standout earns honor at Harvard

Former Huntington Beach standout water polo player Noah Harrison was recently selected the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s North Division Rookie of the Week for Harvard.

The freshman attacker scored six goals in matches against Diablos Valley College, MIT and Yale at the Labor Day Invite.

Harvard takes a 3-4 record in this weekend’s play at the North-South Challenge.

Water polo: Huntington Beach claims Poway tourney, Tesoro second at Weisz

The Huntington Beach and Tesoro boys water polo teams produced strong tournament finishes Saturday.

The Oilers claimed the Poway tournament while the Titans finished second to Palos Verdes at the Weisz Cup at El Dorado.

The Weisz Cup final pitted two of the top teams in Division 3. Palos Verdes, ranked fourth in the division, edged No. 5 Tesoro, 8-7.

In the semifinals, Tesoro defeated No. 8 Peninsula, 7-4.
