OLu’s next coach — Mazzotta?

January 25th, 2012, 11:39 am by

La Habra football coach Frank Mazzotta, shown at left talking to officials, talked with us Tuesday night about the Orange Lutheran football coaching position, vacated earlier Tuesday when Jim Kunau was reassigned at Lutheran after 19 years coaching the Lancers.

Mazzotta, who did not know of the happenings at Lutheran until we called him, said he would have to take a look at a bunch of items before expressing interest in moving to Lutheran — pay, benefits, state of the school and its football and athletic programs, and more.

He said he is very content at La Habra, where he has coached the Highlanders to multiple CIF and league championships and made La Habra one of the top public school football programs in Southern California.

Mazzotta is always a name to think about, when a big private-school coaching position becomes available, because he is the kind of coach worth pursuing. Same with Matt Logan at Centennial of Corona. And another public school coach who has done remarkable work making his program a winning one — Eric Lo at Huntington Beach, whose name surely will come up when people talk about who would be a strong candidate to replace Kunau at OLu.

OC all-star coaches … your suggestions, please

January 10th, 2012, 8:14 am by

Any day now, Phil Anton of the Brea Lions will ask Fryer and Albano to help the Lions select the North and South coaches for this summer’s Orange County All-Star Football game.

The Lions try to avoid selecting men who have coached in the game previously, but that is difficult to do. So, at least the Lions try to avoid guys, coaches who are veterans to some degree, who coached in the game fairly recently.

Last year’s coaches were Myron Miller of Tustin (South) and Michael Cobleigh of Cypress (North).

There are some good coaches who have not coached in the game, because they have turned down the offer — coaches like Mike Marrujo of Valencia, Jeff Bailey of Yorba Linda and Troy Thomas of Servite. Either of those three would be great choices for the North team this year. Most everybody else you could think of as a worthy candidate has coached in the game, believe me.

What about, for the South, Harry Welch of Santa Margarita or Robert Frith of El Toro? Jon Hamro of San Clemente (first year as head coach in 2011, sure, but what a year!) … Eric Lo of Huntington Beach?

Give us your suggestions for North and South coaches.
