Girls water polo: Back Bay Splashdown Five, get ready! (poll)

February 21st, 2013, 11:44 pm by

Saturday night’s CIF Division 1 girls water polo final will pit Back Back rivals Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar against each other for the fifth time this season.

I wonder how many rivals in any high school sport in Orange County can say they have played five times in a single season, with the last one for a CIF championship? My guess, not many.

Newport and CdM truly have a unique relationship in girls water polo in that they play their annual Battle of the Bay nonleague game — a must-see match each season — and then enter the same high-powered tournaments.

Here’s a recap of the previous four matches this season – which the teams split (pictured above: NH’s Cleo Harrington, far left, and CdM’s Ally McCormick):

Girls water polo: CdM’s Greek transfers not yet eligible

November 19th, 2012, 1:31 pm by

Corona del Mar’s Greek transfers, twins Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis, have not been declared eligible by the CIF-SS because paper work from their previous school is needed but they will at least be eligible after Dec. 31, the section explained Monday.

Dec. 31 is the end of the sit-out-period for students who don’t make a valid change of residence, the section said.

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar twins sign with USC

November 14th, 2012, 2:44 pm by

Corona del Mar twins and Greek transfers Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis have signed with USC, Corona del Mar reports.

Both girls are talented attackers who have moved from Greece, where they were born.

Stephania is a left-hander and Ioanna is a right-hander.

The girls have played for Greece’s junior and senior national teams. They helped Greece’s juniors claim the European junior title.

The twins also are two reasons why Corona del Mar is a good pick to start the season ranked No. 1 in Orange County.

The Sea Queens have already been tabbed as the No. 1 team in the Division 1 preseason poll.
