Water polo recruiting: El Toro's White commits to Bruins

Yes, the UCLA Bruins have indeed landed arguably the two best high school water polo players in the country. El Toro attacker Griffin White said moments ago that he has signed with UCLA.

The Bruins also have received a commitment from Villa Park defender Josh Samuels, The Register's player of the year. Samuels planned on signing his letter later this afternoon.

Five players of the year and the late coach Grafton Weiss were among the Orange County selections to the All-CIF-Southern Section boys water polo teams, which were released Monday.

Weiss, who died a week after helping coach Katella to its first section crown, was selected Division VII coach of the year by his fellow coaches. About 750 people attended the memorial service for Weiss on Dec. 6.

Weiss, 49, died from hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Katella junior attacker Dillon Avila was voted the Division VII player of the year.

In Division I, Foothill goalie Jay Lovero and attacker Griffin White of El Toro shared player of the year honors.

In Division II, Mater Dei attacker Alex Wherry, a junior, and senior Josh Samuels of Villa Park were co-players of the year.

Foothill's Jim Brumm in Division I and Mater Dei's Chris Segesman in Division II also earned coach of the year awards.

Esperanza (13-15) at El Toro (26-2), 3:15 p.m.

Prediction: The Aztecs impressed with a 16-8 victory against Laguna Hills in a wild-card match Tuesday night. Esperanza finished 10th in the county poll and over the years, has been known for its toughness. But top-ranked El Toro's shooters will be too much for the Aztecs, who will have a hard time keeping this one close. The Chargers will notch their 40th all-time Division I playoff victory, tying them with Downey for sixth on the all-time list.
