El Toro at No. 7 Trabuco Hills (Sea View League, 5 pm)

El Toro (3-2) is in third place, the Mustangs (4-0-1) in first place. Northwood (3-1-1) sits in between. The Mustangs won the first meeting, 2-0. Trabuco Hills still hasn't allowed a goal in five league games, a remarkable feat. To win, El Toro will have to crack the un-crackable defense thus far. With a victory, El Toro solidifies it's hold on third place, while positioning itself for title hopes still. Trabuco Hills needs a victory to stay ahead of Northwood and in control of the Sea View race.

No. 3 Mission Viejo at No. 1 Aliso Niguel (South Coast League, 5 pm)

It doesn't get much better than two top-5 county teams facing off, except when its for first place in the strongest league in the county. The Diablos stunned the Wolverines and South Coast standings with a 1-0 victory in the team's first meeting. Mission Viejo hasn't lost since. The Wolverines (3-1-1) beat San Clemente (3-1-1) to pull back into title contention, and can catch the Diablos (4-0-1) with a win in this one. But a Mission Viejo win puts four points between it and Aliso Niguel.

Tesoro at No. 4 San Clemente (South Coast League, 3:30pm)

A big game for the Tritons (3-1-1), who are currently tied with Aliso Niguel for second place. The Titans (0-3-2) just haven't put it together in league, but that could change in the final five games, starting today. That's what makes this a dangerous game for San Clemente. The Titans are out to play spoiler, and maybe somehow find their way into the playoffs. With Aliso and Mission Viejo playing today, one, if not both, will get points, so it's critical San Clemente gets points itself.

Its next is moving up the Division II rankings. Here is the current listing:

DIVISION II
1. Flintridge Sacred Heart
2. Chaminade
3. Harvard-Westlake
4. Valencia/V
5. Canyon

Canyon, the highest ranked DII school in Orange County, might have a hard time without those other teams losing. But considering no other county school is in the top 10 in Div II, it appears Canyon's the best county option for a CIF title in that division.

The team doesn't shy away from CIF talk, or the rankings. After beating El Dorado, 3-2, on Tuesday, preserving first place, game-winning goal scorer Alana Mitchem said this, "If we would have loss, not only wouldn't we be in first place, it would effect how we are ranked in CIF. We want to be ranked No. 1."

Canyon relies on a high-pressure style of play. The Comanches use their speed to force mistakes, make runs and score goals. El Dorado coach Marc Smith said what allows Canyon to play that style is having depth.

Of the 18 non-goalie players on the roster, at least 14 played a solid number of minutes. And it comes from every grade level. Freshman Taylor Alderete is lightning in the front, while freshman Jamie Smith contributes off the bench on defense.

Sophomore Sarena Granandos assisted the game-winner Tuesday, and sophomore Courtney Tye saw action in the backfield.

Junior Darien Pyka is the heart-and-soul of the defense, while junior Alana Mitchem netted two goals Tuesday.

And senior keeper Linzey Smith is hard to beat, while seniors Caitlin Williams, Stephanie Morgan, Jessica Murphy, Lauren Irwin, Brooke Atkinson and Ava Aguado play signficant roles.

Records: Canyon 13-4-2, 4-0-1; El Dorado 10-4-1, 3-2

How it looked: El Dorado coach Marc Smith said he felt Canyon control action throughout the contest. The Golden Hawks had trouble putting attacks and strong runs together, but they scored on the couple opportunities that came their way.

Canyon took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes in. El Dorado answered 5 minutes later to even it at 1. El Dorado took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half before Canyon tied it at 2 with about 10 minutes to play.

Who scored: Canyon's Taylor Alderete gave her team a 1-0 lead after beating her defender deep in the box, then the keeper near post.

El Dorado came back on Christey Self's goal. The Hawks played in the ball into the box, where it became free and Self knocked it in.

El Dorado went in front 2-1 on Alyssa Reardon's goal. Off a throw-in, the ball became free at the top of the box, where Reardon put a crack on it and sent it in high left corner.

Alana Mitchem took advantage of her chance when she ripped a hard right footer inside the box. The ball went off the Hawks' goalie and into the net to make it 2-2.

Mitchem scored the game-winner on a through ball from Sarena Granados.

League standings: It was a huge win for the Comanches, as it kept them in first place in the Century race. With a win El Dorado could have jumped into the top spot. Now the Hawks are likely to be in a three-way tie for second place (depending on the rest of today's results).

High five to ... : El Dorado sweeper Jessica Shirley-Jasper. Without her, the Hawks lose this match 5-2, that's how important Shirley-Jasper was to her team's defense Tuesday. Though smaller for a sweeper, she shows great instincts for being in the right spot and the toughness needed at the position.

Estancia at Costa Mesa (Orange Coast League, 4:45 pm)

What's better than a battle for first place? A battle for first place between two teams that still are unbeaten, thus the case with this game. Costa Mesa (3-0-1) currently has a leg up in the league race over Estancia (2-0-2). That could change after today. The teams played to a 1-1 tie on Jan. 8 in the first meeting. The winner - if there is one - no doubt is the favorite for the Orange Coast crown.

Orange Lutheran at JSerra (Trinity League, 3:15pm)

If JSerra (1-2-1) has any postseason plans, a victory is a must today. The Lancers (2-2-0) have a slim lead in the standings and are currently in third place in league. A win by OLu today creates a little breathing room for the playoffs, but a loss and the battle for the final playoff spot continues to the end between these two squads.

El Toro vs Huntington Beach at Woodbridge High (Sea View League, 3:15pm)

Another playoff berth on the line, the Chargers and Oilers are currently fighting it out. El Toro (2-2-0) and HB (1-1-2) are tied for third place. The teams close out the first half of league with this one, and it will determine the shape of the standings. If one of these teams win, it gives them an inside track to the playoffs, at least until the next game in this crazy league.

The No. 3 Griffins led 1-0 at the half.

Records: Los Alamitos 13-2-4, 4-0; Marina 6-5-4, 2-2

How it looked: Los Alamitos was in control throughout, missing some early opportunities. The Griffins scored in the final two minutes of the first half to take a 1-0 lead and swing momentum to their side in a major way.

Marina, though not getting many looks, was playing solid defense and the goal in the first half hurt their spirits.

The Griffins added their second goal 20 minutes into the second half. They scored their third seven minutes later.

Marina scored its goal in the final minute of the game.

Who scored: The Griffins got on the board off a free kick from Jessa Yukihiro. As her kick sailed into the box, the Vikings goalie charged up and jumped, but Ari Carillo beat her to the ball and scored on a header to lead 1-0.

Los Al went in front 2-0 when Kiley Godfrey received a perfectly-placed long ball from Natalle Donaldson and sent it in far post.

The Griffins finished their scoring on Katie Peterson's goal. The senior beat two defenders, then pivoted and blasted her shot far post to make it 3-0.

The Vikings goal came off the foot of Rebecca Cruz, whose right-footer ground ball found the far post corner.

High five to ...: Katie Peterson. The Griffins senior captain was kicked early and had to leave the game. Griffins coach Steve Soler said his team went into a lull after her injury, but Peterson was not done. She said she had to get back on the field and rally her teammates.

"I feel like the captain can't sit out," Peterson said. "As soon as I got hurt I was thinking about coming back on."
