Girls volleyball: CIF-SS quarterfinals schedule

Here is the schedule of CIF-SS girls volleyball quarterfinal matches, set for Saturday night. This is the list of matches involving county teams. All matches start at 7 p.m., unless noted

Girls basketball: Woodbridge names David Yates to replace Eric Bangs

David Yates, a former assistant boys basketball coach at Mission Viejo and Northwood, has been named to replace Eric Bangs as girls basketball coach at Woodbridge, Athletic Director Rick Gibson said today.

Yates spent the last three years at Mission Viejo. Prior to that, he assisted then head Northwood boys basketball coach Tim O’Brien for three years.

He will continue to work in his position in campus safety at Creekside School in Irvine.

“We want every player to get better on the court and I think you will see an exciting brand of basketball,” Yates said.  “I think we can play fast and get up and down the court.” Read the rest of this entry »

Nike update: Recap and analysis of Cajon-Mater Dei

Here is my postgame breakdown of top-ranked Mater Dei’s 64-56 victory over Cajon. The Monarchs entered the game ranked No. 1 in the county and state. Cajon is ranked fifth and had only one loss.

Nike update: I think Mater Dei should play Brea Olinda

Mater Dei and Brea Olinda have both played Cajon this season.

Brea Olinda is 1-1 against Cajon and Mater Dei just beat Cajon, 64-56. So, why not have Brea Olinda and Mater Dei play each other. Who wants to see that? They should play at next year’s Extravaganza. That’s all I’m saying. Who would win that game?

Nike update: Mater Dei takes lead into fourth quarter

Except for that brief run by Cajon to start the third quarter, the Monarchs controlled the third quarter. Mater Dei went on a 16-0 run to take a 47-38 lead late in the quarter.

Nike update: Mater Dei isn’t down for long

Cajon opened the second half on a 6-0 run for a 38-31 lead.

That seemed to wake the Monarchs up as they answered with an 12-0 run of their own and now leads 43-38 halfway through the third.

Cajon senior guard Layshia Clarendon, who is headed to Cal, had a slow first quarter, but picked up her production in the second.

Nike update: Cajon making second quarter charge

Mater Dei led 27-16, but Cajon scored seven consecutive points to get to within four at 27-23. Layshia Clarendon drilled a 3-point field goal and Kori Walker had consecutive layups off of Mater Dei turnovers to get back in the game.

I think I spelled it correctly. Anyway, the sophomore forward came off the bench to score six quick points to help Mater Dei out a 20-8 lead after the first quarter.
