Fan voting finalized for O.C.'s top athletes

We entered the finals of fan voting for the OCVarsity athletes of the year with two deserving boys candidates and two deserving girls candidates.

We're going to exit the voting with two fans winners from the boys and two from the girls.

One reason is that we clearly had some voting irregularities over the final two days, so much so that the voting no longer seemed all that valid. We were going with an honor system, but there clearly was stuffing of the online ballot boxes happening.

The other reason is that we simply have four outstanding finalists who deserve recognition from the fans, so why not recognize all of them?

Therefore, your choices for the OCVarsity athletes of the year are (in alphabetical order):

Robert Refsnyder, Laguna Hills football and baseball
Cindy Tran, Edison swimming
Cecil Whiteside, Newport Harbor football and track and field
Mary-Rachel Walsh, St. Margaret's tennis, soccer and lacrosse

All four will be invited to attend our annual dinner to honor Orange County's athletes of the year in each sport.

The dinner also is where we will announce the Register's choices as the county's overall and small schools athletes of the year. The Register's picks could be the same as the fans' and the OCADA or drastically different (please note, we won't finalize the selections until after the upcoming weekend of championships).

Thanks to all who passionately supported their favorites, even if the passion occasionally was a little over the top.

Semifinal voting starts for top girls athletes

We're down to the final four in fan voting for the top O.C. girls athlete for the 2008-09 school year, and we have some impressive candidates remaining.

Each semifinal features an aquatics star against an athlete with success in myriad sports.

Now it's up for you to pick your finalists.

Semifinal voting will end Friday at 8 a.m. And the finals will begin Saturday.

We literally had a tie when we checked our votes for one of the second-round showdowns for the OCVarsity fans' choice for girls athlete of the year.

So we need to extend the voting for one matchup: Laguna Beach's Annika Dries vs. Mater Dei's Bri Matthews.

The overtime voting period will end at 6:30 p.m.

Second-round fan voting for girls athlete of the year underway

Fans of Orange County high school sports showed strong support for their favorites in the first round.

Now it's time for the second-round voting to determine the fans' choice as the OCVarsity girls athlete of the year.

Each of the second-round matchups, interestingly, is between a single-sport star and someone who played multiple sports. Does that matter? It's up to you, the fans, to decide.

Second-round voting ends Tuesday at 5 p.m.
