Joe Hay, who was Garden Grove’s varsity football head coach for one remarkable season, died Friday morning.

His wife, Nicole Hay, said she found her husband not breathing Friday morning. She said Joe, 41, wore a mask to deal with sleep apnea difficulties but had not worn the mask when he went to bed Thursday night.

Joe had no other ongoing health issues, she said.

“He just never woke up,” Nicole said Saturday.

Hay coached Garden Grove to the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division championship game in 2009. The Argonauts endured the loss of teammate and senior linebacker Kevin Telles, who passed away shortly after collapsing during the final minutes of the team’s season opener.

Garden Grove went 13-1 that season, with its only loss to La Mirada in the Southern Division championship game.

Hay resigned after the ’09 season to undergo shoulder replacement surgery and devote time to rehabilitate the injury. Nicole said Joe had recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Santa Ana College for the 2012 season, which would have marked his return to coaching.

“Joe was really looking forward to getting back into coaching,” Nicole said.

Joe Hay remained at Garden Grove as a physical education and health teacher. Assistant coach Willy Puga was promoted to replace Hay before the 2010 season, during which the Argonauts returned to the CIF-SS Southern Division championship game to defeat Beckman.

Garden Grove League
LOS AMIGOS (4-1, 0-0) VS. GARDEN GROVE (1-4, 0-0)
Where, when: Garden Grove High, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Garden Grove won at least a share of the Garden Grove League championship the past three seasons. The Argonauts not only won the league title in 2010, they also won the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division championship. They had last year’s Orange County offensive player of the year, and county male athlete of the year, Josh Webb, but the multi-talented Webb graduated.

Where, when:
La Habra High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Fryer on football: Pacifica vs. Garden Grove

September 21st, 2011, 5:03 pm by

PACIFICA (0-2) VS. GARDEN GROVE (1-1)
Where, when:
Garden Grove High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: It’s the battle for football supremacy in Garden Grove, which ties Fountain Valley for the most pleasant-sounding name among Orange County cities. Pacifica has lost to two teams that are not very impressive, Bellflower and Whittier. The Mariners have this final nonleague game before they open Empire League play with much improved Yorba Linda, which looks like a contender for the league championship. Peter Pacifica still needs help

August 8th, 2011, 12:03 pm by

The guy is an Orange County high school  sports icon at Pacifica,  where he attends just about every Pacifica athletic event, cheering on the Mariners and doing his famous “P-A-C-I-F-I-C-A” spell-out.

But Peter Pacifica is having the sort of  financial troubles that could have him leaving Orange County — and Peter is 12 Pacifica events shy of attending his 500th Pacifica game.

Peter and his brother Mitchell have gone through the courts and sought all kinds of help, but to no avail. Maybe some Pacifica alums can help? Mitchell can be reached at 714-272-1974.
