Garden Grove (9-0, 4-0) vs. Santiago (8-1, 4-0)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Garden Grove High

Outlook: Two of the top five teams in the CIF Southern Division square off with the Garden Grove League title at stake.

The Argonauts, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Division, has been dominating their opponents since league play started. In their first four games, Garden Grove has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 211-20.

Quarterback Sean Young has been the key to the offense. He leads the team with 837 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns and he has completed 64 of 112 passes (57.1 percent) for 1,122 and 10 touchdowns.

Can Santiago slow him down and end Garden Grove’s nine game winning streak?

Since losing to Santa Ana Valley (Oct. 2), the Cavaliers, ranked fifth in the latest CIF polls, have won five consecutive games.

Santiago won the outright league title in 2007 and shared it with Garden Grove and Los Amigos last year.

There will be no sharing this year.

So, will it be Garden Grove or Santiago?

Unfortunately, they were on the wrong side of most of them.

An error by the Argonauts (15-11) led to two unearned runs in the first inning, and their bats fell silent through four innings.

Still, trailing by five runs entering the top of the fifth, they strung together three runs on three consecutive hits off Pirates starter Osbaldo Magallon.

"(Most of the game) we hit a lot of balls right at people, but finally got a couple to go through," Argonauts Coach Ricardo Cepeda said.

The rally was stymied, however, after a line-drive double play ended the inning.

Paramount (19-8) moves on to play at Corona del Mar on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Though the Golden Hawks defeated Garden Grove, 15-3, in its last match before league starts next week, the spread wasn’t as wide as it suggests.

“This is a good way for us to go into league,” he said. “There was some separation in the score, but there were close sets. The kids had to come through in them.”

El Dorado had an easier time in singles than doubles. It swept all nine sets, including No. 3 Damin Borooah’s 6-0 victory over the Argonauts No. 1, and substitute Calvin Wu’s 7-5 victory in the final round.

Borooah, a freshman, won all his sets at love. Kevin Ginunas won his sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, and Jack Ventura-Cruess won two sets 6-0, 6-1 before sitting out Round 3.

It was much tighter in doubles, with the Hawks losing the match up of No. 1’s 6-4. Garden Grove also won two doubles sets in Round 2, 6-4 and 6-3.

Yet El Dorado led 9-3 before sweeping the final round. Still, the doubles sets were close. The Hawks’ No. 3 team of Eric DeBoard and Jordan Allen defeated Garden Grove’s No. 1 of Tin Phan and Bryan Le, 6-4. Phan and Le had won both prior sets.

The Hawks No. 1 team of Justin Kim and Daniel Roh beat the Argonauts No. 2 of Kevin Huang and Harry Pham, 7-5. It was also Huang and Pham’s only loss.

“When we are playing our league matches, the third round is going to determine it,” Cyrus said. “We need to be ready to go for the third round. That’s why we condition the way we do.”

In a 70-6 victory against Brethren Christian, Murayama rushed for seven touchdowns - in the first three quarters.

He just missed the Orange County record for most touchdowns in the game. Former Los Amigos running back Andrew Niumata scored a county-record in 1998 against Bolsa Grande.

I saw Murayama play last season and he runs hard. The bad news for the competition is he is only a junior and is his being coached by a man who puts his players in the position to excel. Harry Welch spread the field and has the scheme to cause teams a lot of problems - like tonight.

Oh, and the Tartans have won 36 straight.
