In the Freeway League on Friday:

baseball_iconThe Freeway League baseball race has suddenly tightened up.

Heading into this week, Fullerton looked to be on cruise control, headed toward an easy first-place finish.

Wednesday: Fullerton (8-2, 3-0) at La Habra (7-1, 3-0), 3:15 p.m.

Outlook: Is it a surprise that these two “friendly” rivals are tied atop the Freeway League standings.

Is there any chance that the rivalry can be as heated as it is in football?

Fullerton opened league with a 16-1 victory over Buena Park. The Indians defeated Sunny Hills (6-2) and Sonora (5-4) last week.

Boys soccer playoffs: Brea Olinda blanks Fullerton

February 20th, 2009, 5:30 pm by Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com

What happened: Brea Olinda scored two second-half goals and defeated Fullerton, 2-0, in the first round of the CIF-SS Division II playoffs Friday at Brea Olinda High.

Records: Brea 14-6-3; Fullerton 11-6-2

Impact: Fullerton took second place in their league, with the Indians winning a preseason match against Brea 3-1. Brea tied for the Century League title, but is the No. 2 team from the league for the playoffs. Brea advances to the second round, where it faces the winner of Santa Barbara-Kennedy on Wednesday.

How it looked: Fullerton opened strong, controlling possession for the first 20 minutes. But the Wildcats slowly gained control of the game as the match progressed. Still, it was a pretty evenly played match with both teams matching up well.

An Indians shot hit the crossbar in the first 15 minutes, and obviously that would have changed the game dramatically. Wildcats coach Steve Teal said he thinks his defense doesn't get enough credit for its ability, but Brea was able to stop an attacking Fullerton offense.

Who scored: Brea seniors Chadd Johnson and Slade Menold teamed up on both goals. Menold scored the first, Johnson the second.

On the first, Johnson's header attempt hit off the post as was knocked away by the keeper, but Menold was positioned for the rebound and kicked it in.

On the second. Menold took a throw-in and headed it to Johnson, whose header beat the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

High-five to ...: Slade Menold. The senior received what I think was an unfair yellow card trying to break up a shoving match. He told the opposing player to walk away while stepping in between his teammate and the opposing player. The ref gave him a yellow. Menold came back on the field and scored the first goal. He also played solid in the middle for the Wildcats in the first half.
