Girls soccer: Estancia’s Hubbard finds success on and off the pitch

December 20th, 2012, 12:42 am by

Estancia junior forward Jackie Hubbard recently showed just how strong her commitment is to making the world a better place.

Hubbard left the team for eight days earlier this month to participate in a volunteer effort with the Newport Mesa Christian Church in Haiti.

She raised the money needed for the trip and was with a group of 20 people that handed out food and water filters in villages, schools, and churches throughout the country.

The volunteer effort also seemed to inspire Hubbard once she returned to the pitch, as she has scored four goals in four games upon her return to the team.

According to Eagles head coach Jessica Perry, Hubbard wants to go back to the country and continue her volunteer efforts.

“She is an awesome kid and a great soccer player,” Perry said.

Football: Estancia trying to make history again Friday night

December 1st, 2011, 1:03 pm by

Estancia’s football team has gone farther than any other football squad from the school in the CIF playoffs.

Friday night, the Eagles will try to take another step when they meet top-seeded Beckman at 7 p.m. at Estancia in the CIF-SS Southern Division semifinals.

Preparing for the game, we were wondering when Estancia started its football program.

Coach Mike Bargas said the school first fielded a varsity football team in 1965. The school’s first graduating class was in 1966, according to school officials.

Beckman, by the way, fielded its first varsity team in 2005 under Brian Mustain, who coached Beckman for three years.

If there are any players from that 1965 Estancia team that would like to share their comments about the team’s success, we would love to hear from them.

We’ve heard how the football team’s success has been a big boost to the school and the community.

The winner faces the Corona del Mar-Laguna Beach winner in the finals next week.
