Football: The Saturday morning stars of the week

Here are my picks for the my Saturday morning stars of the week. Each week, I will pick one offensive and defensive player to highlight their performance.

Offensive

Troy Poole, Esperanza, RB

The Aztecs needed lots of points and thankfully for them Poole kept scoring. Poole, who rushed for 317 yards, scored five touchdowns. He scored on runs of 11, 3, 2, 76 and 47 yards in Esperanza’s 49-34 victory over Whittier Christian

Football recruiting: Esperanza lineman headed to Lone Star state

Note: This post has corrected Hulick’s weight

Esperanza senior-to-be lineman Carl Hulick (6-3, 290) has committed to SMU, Aztecs football coach Greg Kemp said in an e-mail Thursday night.

Hulick made an unofficial visit to the Conference USA school over the weekend.

Recruited as an offensive guard or center, Hulick also had offers from Nevada, Army and Stony Brook.

He also plays defense for Esperanza.

Football recruiting: Esperanza’s Hulick adds Conference USA offer

Esperanza two-way linemen Carl Hulick (6-3, 280) has been offered by SMU of Conference USA, his mother, Julianna, reports.

Hulick is taking an unofficial visit to SMU this weekend.

The senior-to-be also has offers from Army, Nevada and Stony Brook.

Hulick is currently No. 21 in the OCVarsity recruiting rankings.

Boys volleyball: Esperanza middle commits

Esperanza middle blocker Darrin Sorrell has committed to Hawaii, Aztecs coach Isaac Owens said. Sorrell will be a senior in the fall.

The Aztecs went 22-5 last season, winning the Century League title.

Softball: Explosion through to quarterfinals

Explosion ace A.C. Borden (Esperanza High) with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the So Cal Choppers and nail down a 3-0 victory. Borden finishes with a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts.

The Explosion will play the Worth Firecrackers-Texas Bombers winner tonight at 6. The Firecrackers lead the Bombers, 12-4, in the top of the sixth.

In the third matchup in the Battle of the ex-Aztecs, Explosion ace A.C. Borden gets her former Esperanza High teammate Kelsea Roth to ground out in the top of the sixth.

Borden leads Battle of the ex-Aztecs series, 2-0-1.

Borden with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the So Cal Choppers in the top of the sixth. She has eight strikeouts through six innings.

Esperanza senior-to-be lineman Carl Hulick (6-3, 280)  has been offered by Nevada, Aztecs football coach Greg Kemp reports.

The Aztecs’ MVP from last season was offered by Army in the spring.

J.W. North adds championship to fairy tale season (video)

Two seasons ago, the Huskies of J.W. North finished 4-24.

Last season, they finished 9-19.

This season, they were nowhere to be found in numerous preseason SoCal rankings.

And now they stand tall as Division I champions, defeating Esperanza 7-1.

Highlights include a bases clearing double, plays at the plate, and one Husky of a dog pile.

Parking, entry, tix info for Dodger Stadium

June 1st, 2011, 7:00 pm by

Tickets: $5 for children 13 and younger and for students with valid student identification; $10 for adults. All seating is general admission. Expect all seating to be on the field level. Tickets good for both of that day’s games; if you want to go both days, you need one ticket for Thursday and another for Friday.

Entry: The field-level gate in the left-field corner. Ticket booths are in that area, too.

Parking: Free. Use Lot G. Expect only one gate to be open, the Sunset Gate.

Spread the word among your Beckman-Woodbridge-Mission Viejo-Esperanza-buddies.

Oxford Academy? This will be your third year in a row making the cruise to UC Riverside for the Division 6 final. You know the route. Tickets at UCR: $5 and $9. Parking: $5.

Esperanza adds a run in the 6th

Ryan Cooper tripled with two outs, and scored on a wild pitch.

Esperanza 6, Long Beach Wilson 2 as we head for the seventh and what will be the final inning if Esperanza retains the lead here in a Division 1 semifinal at Blair Field.

Winner plays JW North of Riverside in the D1 final on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Dodger Stadium.
