Fryer’s top 10 vote

February 6th, 2012, 1:32 pm by

An interesting week for the vote … last week, Ocean View beat Mission Viejo; Orange Lutheran lost twice, yes, but to the top two teams in the state rankings (Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly) …

My vote, one of six that are used to compile the top 10, went like this today …

Football recruiting: High-energy Esperanza lineman signs with UCLA

February 1st, 2012, 10:43 am by

Esperanza offensive lineman Carl Hulick — known for his intensity and leadership skills – has signed with UCLA, the senior said in a text message moments ago.

“(I feel) happy and confident it was the right choice,” Hulick said in a text message.

Veteran Esperanza assistant Bill Pendleton said Hulick is a fierce competitor who emerged as a strong leader.

Hulick was a team captain as a junior – which Pendleton said is rare at Esperanza.

Sounds like the kind of kid that will help change the atmosphere at UCLA.

Basketball: Who has the best student-section in O.C.?

January 6th, 2012, 8:18 am by

Maybe it’s the guys at Esperanza.

They were very enthusiastic Thursday night in the Esperanza gym, where their energy contributed to Esperanza’s shockingly one-sided 75-58 victory over Foothill, which is No. 5 in Orange County. Esperanza is not in the top 10, but could get some votes next week.

Yes, Esperanza, I believed that you could win, I believed that you could win, I believed that you could win. But by 17 points?!?!?

I shot this inferior-quality picture (left) on my Blackberry. (Hey, I’m lucky I got that.)

I will be at the El Toro-Capistrano Valley game tonight, and Capo usually has an involved student section. As does Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei, Servite, Sunny Hills … am I forgetting somebody? Let me know.

Esperanza, OLu players make college choices

October 25th, 2011, 12:25 pm by

Nick Catalano, senior outfielder at Esperanza, committed to Oregon according to Esperanza coach Mike Curran, who sure has sent a lot of Aztecs to college and pro ball. Catalano also is a fine football player, and has a 3.85 GPA.

Orange Lutheran senior shortstop Cody Nulph committed to Pepperdine, OLu coach Eric Borba tells us. Nulph has started at shortstop since the middle of his freshman year, and is among five Lancers to commit to a D1 school (the others: Brent Wheatley/USC; Art Moran-Vidrio/CS Fullerton; Conner Sullivan/Duke; Jason Martin/Long Beach State).

Fryer on football: Foothill vs. Esperanza

October 5th, 2011, 4:22 pm by

FOOTHILL (3-2, 1-0) VS. ESPERANZA (3-2, 0-1)
Where, when: Yorba Linda High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Foothill is an intriguing team. The Knights’ losses are to good opponents – 3-2 Tustin and 4-1 Huntington Beach – and their victories are over teams they would be expected to beat – Beckman, and winless San Juan Hills and Canyon. The victory over Canyon was by a 49-0 score last week in the league opener for both.

Boys water polo: Villa Park’s Churnside hangs ‘plus-43′ on Esperanza

September 20th, 2011, 9:35 pm by

Villa Park senior and U.S. youth team player BJ Churnside had an excellent match Tuesday against visiting Esperanza.

He had six goals, six steals, four field blocks and four assists in the Spartans’ convincing 13-3 victory in the teams’ Century League opener.

On the Spartans’ plus-minus grading system for their players, that’s an impressive plus 43 score.

Last season, Churnside didn’t play the league match against Esperanza because of illness but he definitely made up for lost time Tuesday.
