Westlake 3, Costa Mesa 1: Visiting Westlake ended the Mustangs’ improbable season in four-games 25-20, 25-20, 26-28, 25-18, in the CIF-SS Division II quarterfinals Friday night. Costa Mesa finished the season 17-6 and tied for second place in the Orange Coast League. This after winning five games last season, including one league game, and bringing in their seventh coach in seven seasons – Garry Currier.

Esperanza has a 2-1 lead in this match. The Aztecs won Game 3 25-21 and regained their energy. Santa Margarita continues to miss serves. It’s been a great match so far, with - no secret here - the team that plays better winning the game. Aztecs played cleaner volleyball in Games 1 and 3. The Eagles made less errors in Game 2. We’ll see if the Aztecs can end this one, or if Santa Margarita can push it to five games. Update 4 The Aztecs are the first to 20, and lead 20-16. The playoffs are alive and popping off here at Esperanza High. Santa Margarita turned in a strong Game 2 performance, overcoming a slow start and taking the game 25-21. Esperanza has lost a bit of its fire from the opening game, and the crowd has quieted down some too. The Eagles are steadying out.
