Girls water polo: Back Bay Splashdown Five, get ready! (poll)

Saturday night’s CIF Division 1 girls water polo final will pit Back Back rivals Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar against each other for the fifth time this season.

I wonder how many rivals in any high school sport in Orange County can say they have played five times in a single season, with the last one for a CIF championship? My guess, not many.

Newport and CdM truly have a unique relationship in girls water polo in that they play their annual Battle of the Bay nonleague game — a must-see match each season — and then enter the same high-powered tournaments.

Here’s a recap of the previous four matches this season – which the teams split (pictured above: NH’s Cleo Harrington, far left, and CdM’s Ally McCormick):

Girls water polo: Newport Harbor's Schilling inks with UCLA

Newport Harbor water polo center Elissia Schilling has signed with UCLA, her father, John, reports.

The Bruins have signed two excellent centers from Orange County today in Schilling and Mackenzie Barr of Mater Dei.

Last year, the Bruins signed defender Maddie McLaren of Newport Harbor among others in a strong O.C. class.

Girls water polo: Newport Harbor center, defender commit

Newport Harbor water polo center Elissia Schilling and defender Avery Peterson have made college commitments.

Schilling has committed to UCLA while Peterson has picked USC.

Both are two of the better players in Orange County at their positions.

Wednesday is the first day girls water polo players can sign a national letter of intent with a university.
