Football: Pumpkin vs. Scoreboard, Part II

November 3rd, 2009, 2:56 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_iconOne pumpkin blasted through the Pepsi ad on the Titan Stadium scoreboard at Cal State Fullerton. Another flew over it. The scoreboard is OK and ready to go for the Fountain Valley-Edison game there this Friday, according to CSUF associate athletic director Rob Shildone.

And the reason there will be an $8 parking fee for the football game and there was free parking for the pumpkin launch on Halloween -- the pumpkin launch was a CSUF event, Shildone explained.

football_iconI am trying to get the answer to two questions from Cal State Fullerton folks:

1. What sort of damage was done to the scoreboard there on Halloween, when there was a pumpkin launching contest? One pumpkin smashed through the scoreboard.

2. Parking was free for this event, we reported. But there will be an $8 charge for parking for Fountain Valley-Edison football there Friday. Why?

Getting that to you as soon as I find out ...

(BTW -- Nothing against pumpkin launching as a science class project. Lots more fruitful than slicing apart dead frogs.)

Football: Another coin flip coming up in the Sunset?

November 3rd, 2009, 1:13 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blogLast year, there was a five-way tie for first with these teams at 3-2: Edison; Esperanza; Fountain Valley; Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor.

A series of coin flips took Edison and Newport Harbor out of the playoffs (and Newport Harbor had won its final three games, including victories over Esperanza and Los Alamitos, both of which made the playoffs via those coin flips).

Frankly Fryer: Los Alamitos vs. Edison

October 28th, 2009, 6:06 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6Sunset League

NO. 7 LOS ALAMITOS (6-1, 1-1) VS. NO. 1 EDISON (7-0, 2-0)

Where, when: Huntington Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Los Alamitos has a new quarterback, Dylan Lagarde, a sophomore in-season transfer from Long Beach Poly, but that probably won’t make a difference in this game. Edison looks good enough to go 5-0 in the Sunset League, which would be quite an accomplishment, and just might be this year’s Pac-5 Division champion (with Mission Viejo right there with the Chargers, and don’t overlook Servite and Lakewood).
