Softball: Marina vs. Edison Live Blog Remix

May 2nd, 2013, 9:12 pm by

I did a live blog for The Bash at the Beach: Marina vs. Edison Part II on Thursday at Marina High. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM MARINA HIGH

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Marina High for The Bash at the Beach: Edison vs. Marina Part II.

The girls are doing pre-game warm-ups and D.J. Donnie Hagberg is blasting some Roger and Zapp “More Bounce to the Ounce.”Odalay, homie!

Marina hammered Edison, 10-0, in the first meeting. I’m expecting a much closer game this time around. Pride and Sunset League supremacy are on the line in this rematch. Edison comes in at 17-8 overall and 6-1 in league, while Marina is 21-3 and 6-1.

Marina has Michigan-commit Tera Blanco in the circle and Edison is throwing Utah-bound Sammy Cordova. Blanco is having one of the best seasons in her high school career. Cordova has been pitching with a bad ankle. She’s been battling all season.

No more messing around.

IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!

Edison, are you ready?

Marina, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!

Cal State Northridge-bound Carissa Sherman leads off the game with a single up the middle for Edison.

Marina ace Tera Blanco strikes out Notre Dame-bound Ali Wester with a rise ball. One down.

There goes Sherman for second and she’s … SAFE!!! Stolen base for Sherman. WILD PITCH!!! Sherman is on third.

Blanco is throwing gas. Pure heat. Notre Dame-bound Karley Wester is fighting off pitches. Full count. Wester is making Blanco work. Wester grounds out to second and that drives in Sherman from third to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Two down.

Idaho State-bound Reis Birkett draws a two-out walk and Utah Valley-bound Liz Talataina singles up the middle.

Blanco gets Isabella Stoner on a called third strike on the outside corner to end the inning.

Edison ace Sammy Cordova walks her cousin, Sam Agamaite, with one out in the bottom of the first.

BTW, OCVarsity videographer Jonathan Khamis is here shooting the game, so check out ocvarsity.com tonight for video highlights.

Servite football coach

April 24th, 2013, 10:29 am by

Servite has zeroed in on its next football coach. The announcement could come today, maybe Thursday, definitely Friday at the latest.

There were 70 applicants. Paper screening and preliminary talks reduced the pool to four finalists — Servite dean of students and assistant football coach A.J. Gass (and a great player at Servite in the ’90s), and three out-of-area coaches including one from outside of California.

All four were abundantly qualified, or they would not have advanced to the final four.

The opening was created when Troy Thomas decided to return to coaching at Crespi of Encino, his alma mater and where he was coach before he took the Servite job in 2005.

The new coach has one heck of a schedule awaiting him. Here is the Servite football schedule for 2013 …

Football: Edison standout hosting skills camp Sunday

April 13th, 2013, 1:53 pm by

Edison senior football player Elijah Herrera, who helped the Chargers capture a CIF title in 2012, will host the “Get Skillz Football Camp” with his teammates Sunday at Edison from 1-3 p.m.

The camp is for children in kindergarten through eighth grade and will be held at the front field at Edison. There also will be a punt, pass and kick competition.

The camp will focus on speed, agility, 7 on 7 and 1 on 1 drills. A $15 donation is suggested with the benefits going to the David Bolda Football Scholarship Memorial Fund. Bolda is Herrera’s late grandfather and the memorial fund supports Pop Warner players.

Edison swim co-coach Keith Ryan, who helped build the Chargers into a Division 1 power, has resigned to move to Northern California with his wife, Aleah, who recently landed a job as a social worker in the Vallejo school district, he confirmed Tuesday.

Ryan, who had teamed with veteran coach Diggy Riley, broke the news to the Chargers on Monday.

While excited for the next chapter of his life, Ryan said it was hard saying goodbye to a program he put his “heart and soul” into.

“It was a pretty emotional day,” Ryan said.
