Softball: Here comes the finish

June 2nd, 2012, 8:46 pm by

Holy cow! Great Caesar’s Ghost!! What a game!!!

Norco leads Santiago, 6-4, heading into the top of the seventh,

Can the Cougars hang on and win their fourth CIF-SS championship? Can Santiago pull off another amazing comeback and win a fifth CIF-SS title? How good is “Prometheus” going to be? And what about “The Amazing Spider-Man”? Can that dude from “Social Network” pull off being Spidey> I need answers to these questions.

Erin Rodriguez with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Cougars in order.

This is it. Santiago is down to its final three outs. E-Rod, Texas-bound Randel Leahy and Danielle Hernandez coming up for the Sharks.

E-Rod singles to right field to lead off the inning. Sharks fans are going bonkers. Norco fans are sensing a disturbance in The Force.

Softball: Sharks are circling

June 2nd, 2012, 8:32 pm by

Santiago has all the momentum.

Norco can’t get anything going in the top of the sixth.

The Sharks smell blood in the water. They got a taste of it in the bottom of the fifth and my guess is they want more.

Cal Baptist-commit Jordan Mowatt hits a screaming line drive … but it’s right at the shortstop. One down.

Softball: Great defense, YMCA and bases juiced

June 2nd, 2012, 8:22 pm by

Lord Vader, err Santiago coach John Perez, brings Illinois State-bound Erin Rodriguez to relieve Ohio State-commit Erica Romero, who gave up six runs on 10 hits, in the top of the fifth.

Savannah Clark-Adams leads off the inning with a single, but E-Rod heads up a 1-6-3 double play on the next batter to erase that hit.

Second baseman Danielle Hernandez makes a nifty catch in shallow right field to end the inning.

Time for my seventh and final traditional softball fifth-inning stretch of the CIF-SS championship weekend. That’s right, it’s YMCA time.

Softball: You Can’t, You Won’t And You Don’t Stop

June 2nd, 2012, 8:02 pm by

We thought Santiago ace Erica Romero was going to get her first 1-2-3 inning of the game, but it was not to be.

Cal-bound Kylie Reed collects her third single of the game and then steals second with two out sin the top of the fourth.

CONTROVERSIAL PLAY ALERT>>>>> Tennessee-bound Abigail Lockman with a blooper. Santiago shortstop Alex Vargas appeared to make an amazing diving catch. She bobbled it, but appeared to hang on to it. Umps have a conference and rule it a hit. Reed scored on the play.

Softball: When Cougars attack

June 2nd, 2012, 7:42 pm by

Santiago stranded runners on second and third in the first and second innings. Norco ace Emily Lockman is doing that Houdini escape artist thing. Can she keep it up or will the Sharks finally move in for the kill?

Cal-bound Kylie Reed leads off the top of the third with her second single of the game.

WILD PITCH!!! Reed is on second. Norco threatening once again.

Finally, IT’S TIIIIIIIIIME!!!!!

This is what the millions have finally been waiting for … Norco vs. Santiago for the CIF-SS Division 1 title. Norco beat Santiago, 12-4, on March 16 and Santiago came back to beat Norco, 3-2, on April 25. Both teams hail from the Big VIII League.

Norco, are you ready?

Santiago, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!!!

Softball: It’s on like Donkey Kong

June 2nd, 2012, 6:32 pm by

Uppercut, uppercut, body blow, head butt, head butt, head butt, head butt!!! I’m so jacked up for Norco (30-2) vs. Santiago (23-9) of Corona in the CIF-SS Division 1 title game I just head butted everybody on press row.

It is on like Donkey Kong.

Norco vs. Santiago is as close as you come to Yankees vs. Red Sox (check out EPJ’s story in the Riversde Press Enterprise) in high school softball.

These have been two of the most dominant programs in the nation for a long time.

Santiago is trying to win its second consecutive Division 1 championship and fifth overall. Norco, ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports and No. 1 in the nation by ESPN, is trying to win its fourth championship.
