Servite’s football team will play De La Salle of Concord on Oct. 5, Servite coach Troy Thomas confirmed today.
It will be a Servite home game. Site of the game will be announced later. Servite will play De La Salle in 2014, too, when it will be a De La Salle home game.
De La Salle won another CIF State Open Division championship last month. Bob Ladouceur last week resigned as De La Salle varsity football coach, a position he held for 34 years. Justin Alumbaugh was promoted from assistant coach to head coach for the Spartans.
De La Salle has finished No. 1 national rankings seven times during Ladouceur’s tenure.
Servite last season had its first sub-.500 finish in several years, ending with a 3-7 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since Thomas became the school’s coach in 2005.

De La Salle of Concord defensive coordinator Terry Eidson said today that discussions have been initiated that would have Servite playing at De La Salle next season.
“We want to do it,” Eidson said. “We’re working on it.”
Servite has opponents secured for four of its five nonleague games for 2013. The Friars have tried to get an Orange County team to fill that opening, but with no success. El Toro is among the teams that turned down a Servite invitation to play in ’13.
Scheduling games against out-of-area teams can be tricky, with finding mutual open dates the primary challenge.
With winter vacation dates approaching, it is likely that finalizing a Servite-De La Salle game will not occur until January if it happens at all. And usually these arrangements are two-year, home-and-home contracts, meaning one team is the home team one season and the other team is the home team the following season.
Santa Margarita, featuring quarterback Johnny Stanton (pictured), is No. 2 in Cal-Hi Sports preseason state football rankings.
Cal-Hi Sports has De La Salle of Concord at No. 1. Vista Murrieta, strengthened by the additions of transfers Treshon Broughton and Greg Hoyd from Tustin, is No. 3.
While Mark Tennis and his group at Cal-Hi Sports do a great job covering and chronicling California high school sports, yours truly asserts that Cal-Hi Sports can be a tad too enthusiastic about Northern California teams, especially De La Salle. That being said, Tennis and crew know their stuff.
Santa Margarita’s football team, featuring returning All-County quarterback Johnny Stanton, left, is No. 2 in USA Today’s preseason national rankings.
Miami Central of Miami, Fla. is No. 1 in those rankings. De La Salle of Concord is No. 4. Vista Murrieta is No. 22.
Santa Margarita was a CIF-Southern Section and CIF State Champion last year. The Eagles, with a plethora of returning starters, just might be ocvarsity.com’s preseason No. 1.

So what good can Servite take from its 48-8 loss against De La Salle in the CIF State Open Division championship game?
“I didn’t get our guys ready and put them in good situations,” Servite coach Troy Thomas said. “I’ll learn something from it. That’s what happens when you play great teams and great programs, you learn.
“Sometimes you learn you’ve got to get a lot better. I think we learned that tonight. We’re a good football program but we’re not at their level yet.”
