Sixth-ranked Mater Dei and Santa Margarita went the distance in Tuesday’s league opener and the Monarchs were able to escape with the victory, 25-16, 26-28, 25-15, 23-25, 15-13.

Top ranked Servite defeated Santa Barbara, 25-17, 25-21 in the finals of the 37th Annual Dos Pueblos Invitational.

Senior outside Madison Hayden was selected tournament MVP.  Setter Tim Favreau also earned all-tournament honors.

The Friars went 3-1 in pool play. In the first round of the playoffs, the Friars defeated Hart, 25-18, 25-17.

In the quarterfinals, they defeated Dos Pueblos, 25-23, 28-26 and Oak Park, 25-14, 25-21 in the semifinals.

Corona del Mar will face rival Newport Harbor in the finals of the Orange County Championships Monday night at Edison HS.

The finals will begin at 7 p.m.

CdM defeated Tesoro and Dana Hills to advance to the finals. Newport Harbor defeated Orange Lutheran and Laguna Beach.

Here are the results from the first day of the Orange County Championships. Pool play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m., before the teams are sent to their respective playoff brackets.

One night after being swept by Mater Dei, the second-ranked Huntington Beach Oilers pulled off a five-game victory over No. 8 Santa Margarita, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9.

Kyle Bailey led Huntington Beach with 24 kills. Alex Covert added 17.

Mitch Vallis had 32 kills for the Eagles. Corey Lowe had 49 assists.

This year’s Orange County Championships will get underway Friday afternoon. There are four pools of four teams in Division 1. The format is best 2 out of 3. Pool play begins at 3 p.m and resumes Saturday morning.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to the Gold Division playoffs at Edison HS, starting at approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The finals are Monday at 7 p.m. at Edison HS.

The third and fourth-place teams in the pool will go to Fountain Valley for the Silver Division playoffs.

Ticket information: $5 admission fee (2 day ticket) will be charged at the door. There will be a separate admission fee of $5 for the finals on Monday, 3/19/12. Students with ID are $3. Kids under 12 are free!

The action gets underway tonight as Edison and No. 6 Corona del Mar meet in a nonleague match for a special cause. The match will be played at Orange Coast College, with varsity starting at 6 p.m.

All proceeds from the gate and snack bar and any charitable donations will go to the McKenna Claire Foundation for pediatric brain cancer. Donations will be collected at the door.
