Outlook

Cypress-Mayfair

The Centurions are fighting an uphill battle. They lost to Mayfair in tournament play earlier this season, and lost to Villa Park, a team Mayfair also beat. However, that was earlier this season and Cypress is playing better volleyball since then.

The victory gives Pacifica (19-7, 11-3) its  first league title in 27 years.

Myrwold started the game and pitched the first two innings. Gerritse took over from there, allowing two hits in five innings of relief work to get the victory.

Daniel Urbina provided the key hit, with a two-run triple in the third inning.

When: Wednesday at Valencia; Friday at Cypress, 3:15 p.m.

Outlook: Both teams enter the week one game behind leader Pacifica in the Empire League race.

Pacifica is playing two against Katella this week. Cypress won the first meeting against Valencia, 10-4, back on March 25.

Cypress went 3-2 in the recently completed Anaheim Lions Tournament, including a 7-4 victory over Tesoro.

Valencia went 2-3. The Tigers lost their last two games of the tournament.

David Nick (UCLA) enters the week with a .426 batting average with five home runs and 16 RBIs. Carl Robinson is 4-1 for Valencia with a 2.43 ERA.

Michael Newman has hit three home runs.

Valencia has finished its game against Pacifica, but Cypress has two more games, May 12 and 14.

Out of a timeout, the Centurions ran off four points to clinch the match over Loara, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13, and take over sole possession of first place in the Empire League standings.

Cypress is 3-0. Loara is 3-1.

"I want to say it was one of those things where we were focusing on getter better every match," Cypress coach Justin Muller said, "but we knew it was a big match. They were CIF finalist last year. We stepped up."
