Newport Harbor’s girls water polo program combined its junior varsity team with four top freshmen to capture the Costa Mesa Winter Classic on Wednesday.
The Sailors started the four freshmen in victories against reigning CIF Division 4 champion Harvard-Westlake and Division 4 contender Sunny Hills.
“The future is looking bright,” said Newport Harbor coach Brian Melstrom. “It was pretty exciting.”
In a 7-6 victory against Harvard-Westlake, freshman Chanel Schilling (sister of junior Ellisia Schilling) scored a power-play goal with one second left as the Sailors rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final 3:30. Sophomore Maddie Goodell assisted the goal with a cross pass.

Orange Coast League
COSTA MESA (7-1, 3-0) VS. LAGUNA BEACH (7-1, 2-1)
Where, when: Laguna Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Costa Mesa is averaging 47 points a game, the third-highest figure in county football (behind Saddleback Valley Christian and Villa Park). Laguna Beach is fourth, at 46 points a game.
Orange Coast League
ESTANCIA (3-2, 0-0) AT LAGUNA BEACH (5-0, 0-0)
Where, when: Laguna Beach High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Looks like the Orange Coast League championship is on the line in this one, even though it’s the first week of league play. Sure, Costa Mesa will be in the running for the league title. But at this point, these are the two best teams in the Orange Coast. Estancia came close to scoring what would have been one of the season’s bigger upsets last week when the Eagles lost to Beckman by two points.
A defensive-minded game saw Beckman outlast Estancia, 12-10, on Thursday night.
Highlights include a punt that comes close to hitting the cheer squad, the crowd reacting to the New York Yankees’ loss, and an earth-shattering tackle.
There are also interviews with Estancia head coach Mike Bargas and Beckman quarterback Cameron Biedgoly.
BECKMAN (2-2) VS. ESTANCIA (3-1)
Where, when: Estancia High, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Beckman is a difficult team to figure out at this point of the season. The Patriots won the games they should have won, against Hawthorne and Torrance, and lost to superior teams Foothill and Tustin. Estancia recorded something of an upset last week with its 43-27 triumph over Northwood, like Beckman a team from the Pacific Coast League that is clearly the best league in the CIF-Southern Section’s Southern Division.
