Only a handful of county teams remain in contention.

Here's look at Division II:

Teams remaining: 8

County teams alive: 2 (No. 1 Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa)

Quarterfinal times: Friday, 7 pm

Brackets: Top Half - *Laguna Beach-Agoura; *Valencia/V-Royal; Bottom Half - *Claremont-Thousand Oaks; *Costa Mesa-Westlake

Outlook

Laguna Beach-Agoura

Agoura finished third in the tough Miramonte League, and is going to present the Breakers toughest challenge in more than a month. Home court advantage should help Laguna Beach, which can use their quaint gym to their advantage. Laguna Beach hasn't lost in a long time, and there's a confidence that comes with that. Agoura is going to have to shake that confidence, and is going to be playing with nothing to lost against the No. 1 seed.

Costa Mesa-Westlake

The Mustangs upset Arroyo Grande to reach the quarerfinals, and now host No. 2 seed Westlake, winners of the Miramonte League. The good news for Costa Mesa is they've seen Laguna Beach twice, and know what it takes to compete against the best. They are going to need to use what they learned from those matches and execute to perfection. There's a chance their old style gym can disrupt Westlake some.

It wasn't exactly a slam-dunk but my vote for No. 1 in the county football poll went to Tesoro, which knocked off previously No. 1-ranked Mission Viejo in impressive fashion. Tesoro can play better than it did Friday and that should be a scary thought for San Clemente this week.

Tesoro could have won that game at least 38-14 but didn't capitalize on some chances in the third quarter.

I heavily considered Los Alamitos. I saw them beat Narbonne and Narbonne would beat some county top-10 teams. The Griffins might not be dazzling the pollsters, but they are getting the job done. Kinda of like Clark Evans. He sometimes isn't pretty but he gets the job done, is super tough and makes big plays.

I also looked long and hard at Edison. The Chargers' loss to Servite hurts their case but before it is all said and done, they could still get my No. 1 vote.

With the parity in county football, there certainly is a chance the South Coast or Sunset league champions won't be 5-0.

Ok, so here's what the vote I submitted:

1. Tesoro
2. LosAl
3. Edison
4. Mater Dei
5. OLu
6. San Clemente
7. Mission Viejo
8. Servite
9. Newport Harbor
10. Esperanza

One of the final debates Tuesday afternoon during the eligibility hearing for Corona del Mar goalie Martin Babovic centered on the definition of enrollment. It's a key element of the case and Orange County Superior Court Judge Steven L. Perk seemed very interested to explore it.

So, Perk asked assistant Southern Section Commissioner Kristine Palle how the section defines enrollment and she surprised me with her lack of grace that seemed to border on juvenile. But she was correct when she said enrollment starts the first day a student puts his or her "tush" in a chair at a respective school.

Yes, "tush."

Tush? That is how you talk to a judge in his courtroom? Perk didn't seem amused. Try annoyed. State CIF commissioner Marie Ishida seemed to try and clean up the language later by using the word "tush" again.

I can just imagine what the Southern Section and state CIF attorneys were thinking: the judge is asking serious questions and we're being cute - twice. Not good.

Palle and the Southern Section didn't ask for this court case but they should respect a judge trying to do his job for a student-athlete.

SANTA ANA The eligibility case of Corona del Mar water polo goalie Martin Babovic has moved to overtime.

An Orange County Superior Court judge heard arguments and testimony for most of Tuesday before extending the preliminary injunction hearing to Wednesday. Judge Steven L. Perk told the courtroom that he would have a decision Wednesday.

“I know what your arguments are,” Perk told the attorneys. “Somebody is not going to happy.”

Babovic, a senior foreign exchange student from Serbia, is seeking to play for the Sea Kings' varsity. The touted goalie is not eligible to play varsity because his transfer has been determined to be athletically motivated, Scott Donald, an attorney for the Southern Section, told the judge.

James Watson, the father of the family hosting Babovic, testified that his family was not specifically seeking to host a water polo player.

Morning session

SANTA ANA Does anyone know where the pool is here at Orange County Superior Court?

Maybe the basement floor opens like that scene from It's a Wonderful Life and a 50-meter drink magically appears. Man, the pool at Santa Ana Valley is so easy to find.

Ok, so there is no pool here but there is a lot of discussion about water polo as Corona del Mar foreign exchange student Martin Babovic's eligibility case is being heard before Superior Court Judge Steven L. Perk. The senior goalie from Serbia wants to be eligible to play for the Sea Kings' varsity.

The latest: the court is on break until 1:30 p.m. and there is no decision. There have been some interesting testimony, opinions from Perk and of course, some intriguing folks in the courtroom.

Corona del Mar principal Fal Asrani is on the stand as a witness for Babovic. Well-spoken and organized, she confirmed prior testimony that Corona del Mar staff and coaches did not have pre-enrollment contact with Babovic.

Before Asrani, Babovic's host father, James Watson, took the stand and was OK. He was strong on the point that he and his family were not looking for a water polo player when they signed on to be a host family. They were looking for compatibility, though, and that is one of the area CIF went after him on. Watson has two sons who play water polo (one at CdM) and the family stated early on that it has an interest in aquatic sports, among other interests.

The Southern Section said in court today that Babovic is ineligible for varsity competition because his transfer is athletically motivated.

Perk seems very interested in giving Babovic a decision and I would not be surprised if that comes down this afternoon. The judge was critical of the communications of the Southern Section and Corona del Mar on procedure . Perk said they should have communicated much better: CdM should have appealed to the state , and the section could have advised the school better. And all the while, Perk said, Babovic "sits here without a ruling."

Perk is pretty thoughtful.

Remarkably, Southern Section commissioner Jim Staunton was not here this morning but state CIF executive director Marie Ishida is. The section and state have two attorneys before the judge while Richard Bridgford is doing the arguing for Babovic.

Bridgford is the father of Mission Viejo quarterback Allan Bridgford.

He has plans to call Foothill athletic director Vince Brown to the stand next. Foothill, for those scoring at home, has two foreign water polo players (one cleared, one not), so Brown's testimony could be very interesting. For all intensity in the pool, I guess these water polo rivals really are tight.

Section assistant commissioners Kristine Palle and Scott Raftery also are here. I'll get an update posted as soon as possible.
