Swim ’13: Corona del Mar girls have top transfer

February 26th, 2013, 5:02 pm by

Keep an eye on Corona del Mar’s girls swim team.

The Sea Queens not only could receive a boost this spring from speedy Greek transfers and water polo standouts Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis, they also will feature San Marino transfer Stephanie Samudro, a CIF Division 1 finalist last season, Coach Doug Volding reported in his season survey.

Samudro, a junior, finished fourth at the CIF Division 1 finals last season in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 4.45 seconds). She also placed 10th in the 100 fly (57.72).

Corona del Mar also features returning standouts such as Brynne Wong and Ally McCormick.

Girls water polo: Albano’s finals predictions

February 22nd, 2013, 11:09 pm by

After blazing through the first couple rounds of predictions, I struggled with my picks for the water polo semifinals, going just 5-3. The picks don’t get any easier for what should be a great Saturday of water polo finals. But I’m to press on and finish what I started:

Division 1

Newport def. CdM (I wonder if the Sailors peaked in the semifinals but I still like the Sailors’ strength at 2-meter offense and defense and in goal with Harrington. And despite their 8-5 victory against Santa Barbara, they can shoot better than they did in the semifinals. The Haralabidis twins are difference-makers who can raise their games, so the Sea Queens will be make this a one-goal game. Key matchup to watch: Outside shooters Cassidy Papa, Stephania Haralabidis vs. Cleo Harrington. The potential loss of Maddie Musselman (injured) also is a big factor.)

SATURDAY’S CIF-SS GIRLS WATER POLO FINALS

All games at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, Irvine

DIVISION 1

CORONA DEL MAR (26-4) VS. NEWPORT HARBOR (24-6), 6:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Back Bay rivals meet for the fifth time this season, and for the second consecutive season in the Division 1 finals. The season series is split, 2-2. The teams split two games before Greeks transfers Stephania and Ioanna Haralabidis became eligible and split the two when the teams were full-strength.

Newport Harbor rallied last season to defeat Corona del Mar in the finals, 8-7. The victory also improved the Sailors to 2-0 against Corona del Mar in CIF Division 1 finals. Newport Harbor edged Corona del Mar, 6-5, in overtime in the 2008 Division 1 final.

The Sea Queens are 0-3 overall in Division 1 finals but own five section titles in other divisions.

Girls water polo: Back Bay Splashdown Five, get ready! (poll)

February 21st, 2013, 11:44 pm by

Saturday night’s CIF Division 1 girls water polo final will pit Back Back rivals Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar against each other for the fifth time this season.

I wonder how many rivals in any high school sport in Orange County can say they have played five times in a single season, with the last one for a CIF championship? My guess, not many.

Newport and CdM truly have a unique relationship in girls water polo in that they play their annual Battle of the Bay nonleague game — a must-see match each season — and then enter the same high-powered tournaments.

Here’s a recap of the previous four matches this season – which the teams split (pictured above: NH’s Cleo Harrington, far left, and CdM’s Ally McCormick):

Corona del Mar 8, Newport 6

Nonleague at CdM, Dec. 21

The Sea Queens posted the victory despite not having Greek transfers Stephania and Ioanna
