Football recruiting: El Toro’s Manning signs with Pac-12 school

February 6th, 2013, 8:59 am by

El Toro quarterback Conner Manning signs his letter of intent to play for Utah.

Record-setting El Toro quarterback Conner Manning has signed this morning with Utah, his family reports.

Manning was The Register’s offensive player of the year as a junior and a first-team All-County pick this past season.

Utah is expected to have a big day in Orange County today. Westminster defensive end Myron Aiava is expected to sign with the Utes around 1 p.m.

Football: Conner Manning’s record officially 613 yards

September 24th, 2012, 10:07 pm by

Call him Mr. 600? Nope, that won’t do.

El Toro quarterback Conner Manning set the Orange County single-game passing record this past Friday with 613 yards in El Toro’s 77-46 victory against Valhalla of El Cajon.

Manning’s record-night was initially reported as 600 yards, but the El Toro coaching staff adjusted the total to 613 after reviewing the game film.

The previous record was set by Bolsa Grande’s Doug Baughman, who passed for 564 yards in 1996.

“I had no idea what the record was, but we knew he was having a special night,” El Toro coach Rob Frith said. “Conner’s name gets tagged to it, but it’s a team effort. He has to have protection and time to throw the football. He’s got to have receivers that can find the open windows. And he has to be smart enough to read the defense and make those throws. It’s a team thing.

“But I’m really proud and happy for Conner. It’s something to remember.”

Manning completed 45 of 59 passes and a career-high seven touchdowns in the rout.

Fireworks might be in store again this Friday as El Toro faces Garden Grove.

“We haven’t really talked about (the record) a lot,” Frith said. “We know it’s there. It was just a good night for our team.”

Thursday Night Football Madness: The Postmortem

August 23rd, 2012, 10:32 pm by

Is this El Toro QB Conner Manning when he’s not on the field or at school?

I don’t no if we can conclusively rule out that El Toro quarterback Conner Manning isn’t a cyborg sent back from the future to wreak havoc on OC Football after his performance in El Toro’s 47-24 season-0pening victory over Huntington Beach on Thursday night at Trabuco Hills High.

Manning, the county’s single season passing yardage and touchdown record holder, completed 44 of 66 passes for 454 yards and six touchdowns. The one stat that gives evidence that he might be human is the one fourth-quarter interception he threw late in the fourth quarter deep in HB territory. But that might have just been a clever ruse to throw that pesky Terminator-hunting John Connor.

Manning completed four or more passes to six different receivers as he led the Chargers no-huddle offense on a huge night. And that was just the season opener in Zero Week. I can’t wait to see what El Toro’s offense looks like when it hits the South Coast league.

“I felt so rusty, but I think our offense still played really well,” Manning told Mr. FryDay Night after the game.

Football: Who is O.C.’s best football player entering the season?

August 9th, 2012, 7:57 pm by

I’m hard at work on another edition of Orange County’s Hot 100 players to watch. It’s a fun but challenging task to forecast — hopefully all — of the top players to watch before the football season begins.

Who saw Josh Webb’s dramatics coming for Garden Grove in 2010? Who knew Conner Manning of El Toro would become the county’s first 4,000-yard passer in 2011?

What player should be ranked No. 1 in the county going into this season? That’s my question at the moment but feel free to send me or post your nominations for the Hot 100 players here (email: dalbano@ocregister.com).

Football recruiting: El Toro’s Manning scores first scholarship offer

June 26th, 2012, 10:53 pm by

El Toro senior-to-be quarterback Conner Manning (6-2, 195) has been offered by Utah, his uncle, Mike, said in an e-mail Tuesday night.

The Utah Utes are the first school to offer The Register’s 2011 offensive player of the year. Utah signed San Clemente’s Travis Wilson in February.

Interestingly, Utah also has offered Santa Margarita QB Johnny Stanton.

In April, Manning was selected MVP QB at the Nike Football Training Camp at Cerritos College. Last season, Manning became the first county QB to ever pass for 4,000 yards.

Look for Manning to pick up more offers. He works privately with QB guru Bill Cunerty.

Football recruiting: El Toro’s Manning playing waiting game

June 21st, 2012, 12:11 pm by

El Toro senior-to-be quarterback Conner Manning (6-2 1/2, 195) became the first 4,000-yard passer in Orange County history last season en route to being selected Register offensive player of the year.

In the spring, several Pac-12 schools watched him throw at El Toro, including Utah, Oregon State, Washington State, UCLA and USC. Utah watched him twice.

He also had visitors from Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Colorado State, Wisconsin and Louisiana Tech.

Manning highlighted his spring by earning the MVP QB award at the Nike Football Training Camp at Cerritos College.

But despite the stats, the recruiting attention and combine success, Manning remains without a scholarship offer. Manning said in a text message Wednesday night that he thought he would have an offer by now but his private QB coach isn’t worried.

“Been through this for 40 years,” quarterback guru Bill Cunerty said. “I think it will work out.”

Football recruiting: El Toro’s Manning raises profile with MVP performance

April 1st, 2012, 8:51 pm by

NORWALK El Toro quarterback Conner Manning said his recruiting has felt “a little quiet” recently.

After his performance at Sunday’s Nike Football Training Camp, the junior could soon feel a surge in his recruitment.

Manning (6-2, 195) emerged from a talented field to earn MVP quarterback honors for his performance at Cerritos College.

“There were a lot of good quarterbacks here but at the end of the day, he (Manning) was the most consistent and accurate,” Nike camp director Brian Stumpf said of Manning, The Register’s 2011 offensive player of the year.

“We saw Conner last week in Dallas (for an Elite 11 regional competition). … The difference we saw today with him was that he was so much more comfortable and confident. … He was really crisp. He threw the ball, spun it well. Real consistent. Ball was coming off the hand a lot better than it did in Dallas.”

Manning agreed that his experience in Dallas helped him Sunday.

Football: Tustin looking for another playoff victory over El Toro

December 7th, 2011, 9:13 pm by

I had forgot that Tustin defeated El Toro, 24-17 in the second round last year. I finally remembered today when talking with some Tustin players at practice.

The Tillers rushed for 255 yards and Conner Manning passed for 65 yards and was intercepted three times. El Toro played two quarterbacks that night.

A lot has changed since then, with Manning establishing himself as one of the county’s top passing threats.

Will there be a repeat of last year? Or will El Toro avenge the loss?
