Swim: Capo Valley’s DeShon receives admission to Pac-12 contender

Rising Capistrano Valley and Mission Viejo Nadadores swimmer Spencer DeShon has received admission to Stanford, the senior confirmed Tuesday.

DeShon will make an official recruiting trip to the Pac-12 school late next week.

“I’m really excited,” he said during the No. 3 Cougars’ victory at Tesoro. “When I got that (notification) e-mail, I was so happy. … I called my mom (Stephanie) first and went to Jack (DesCombes’) house.”

Swim: Edison-product Shields helps Cal dethrone Stanford

Cal senior swimmer Tom Shields (Edison) captured the 200-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 41.23 seconds to help the Golden Bears capture the Pac-12 men’s title at Federal Way, Wash., ending Stanford’s legendary 31-year streak of winning the conference titles.

Cal scored 825 points to outdistance runner-up Stanford at 800. USC took third with 638.5.

Swim: Edison product Shields wins twice, puts Cal in contention at Pac-12′s

Cal senior swimmer Tom Shields (Edison) won the 100-yard butterfly (44.92 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (46.12) and gave his team the lead for good in the third leg of the 400 medley relay to help the Golden Bears open a 583-520 lead against Stanford at the Pac-12 swim championships in Federal Way, Wash. on Tuesday.

The meet concludes on Wednesday, and it could be a huge victory for the Shields and his teammates.

Stanford has captured 31 consecutive conference titles.

Swim: Nadadores distance coach departing for college gig

Mission Viejo Nadadores assistant Tyler Fenwick, a rising coaching star who trains some of Orange County’s top high-school age distance swimmers, has accepted an associate coaching post at the University of Tennessee, he said in an e-mail.

Fenwick, pictured far left, aws previously a graduate assistant at Tennessee. He will start coaching with the Vols after the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials.

With the Nadadores, he has worked with county swimmers such as Janardan Burns of Aliso Niguel and David Heron of Mission Viejo.

Swim: Brea Olinda backstroker commits to Redlands

Brea Olinda swimmer Ryan Lank has committed to Redlands, Wildcats coach Gil Rotblum announced.

Lank was the backstroker who led off the Wildcats’ school-record 200-yard medley relay at the CIF-SS Division 2 finals. Brea Olinda finished fifth at 1:38.38.

At the Century League finals, Lank finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.34) and 100 backstroke (55.68).

Swim: Laguna Hills swimmer joins Division II power

Laguna Hills senior swimmer Luke Mitchell has signed with Division II contender UC San Diego, his mother, Nancy, reports.

Mitchell, who trains with the Mission Viejo Nadadores and Coach Tyler Fenwick, finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.18 seconds at the recent CIF-SS Division 1 finals.

He also finished 15th in the 100 butterfly in 51.46.

Swim: Troy freestyler Li commits to Division II power

Troy freestyler Paul Li, who placed in the top-three in two events at the CIF-SS Division 2 swim finals, has committed to a four-year school.

Li is headed to UC San Diego of the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Diving Conference.

At the CIF-SS Division 2 finals, the senior placed second in the 200 free (1:39.57) and third in the 500 free (4:32.13).

Li was a big reason why the Warriors broke into the county top-10 dual meet rankings this spring.

The Division 2 Tritons feature several former O.C. standout boys, including: Alex Merrill (Los Al), Martin Vanek (El Toro) and Dane Stassi (Woodbridge). The UC San Diego men placed second to Drury at the Division 2 championships this past season.

Swimming: Mission Viejo coach Boss headed to Concordia

Mission Viejo boys and girls swim coach Jeff Boss has resigned to take over the men’s and women’s swim programs at Concordia, he confirmed.

Boss guided the Mission Viejo boys to four CIF-SS Division 1 titles and the girls to one.

He was looking to return to the collegiate ranks and will get the chance with Concordia. He replaces Ken Dory, the former Irvine boys coach.

Boss is the former head men’s coach at Northern Iowa.

The Southern Section recognized Boss at last week’s finals for his dedication to Mission Viejo.

Boys swim: Ex-Mission Viejo standout sets American record, Shields and Cal grab team title

Former Mission Viejo High standout Chad La Tourette set the American record in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday night while ex-Edison standout Tom Shields helped Cal claim the team title at the NCAA Division 1 championships in Seattle.

La Tourette finished second but established a new American standard with a time of 14 minutes, 24.35 seconds, breaking Chris Thompson’s legendary 2001 record by just over two seconds. Georgia’s Martin Grodzki edged La Tourette with a time of 14:24.08.

Shields placed second in the 200-yard butterfly.

Swim: Ex-Edison star Tom Shields blazes at NCAA champs for Cal

Ex-Edison standout swimmer Tom Shields captured the 100-yard butterfly (44.76 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (44.86) for Cal in an impressive effort at the NCAA Division 1 championships in Seattle on Friday night.

Shields won the butterfly for the second time in three seasons but showed the most progress in the backstroke.

Seeded sixth going into the dorsal final, Shields defended his title by dropping about 1 1/2 seconds from his prelim time and missed Ryan Lochte’s American record by just under three-tenths of a second.

Shields and Cal lead the team competition heading into Saturday’s final day.

Girls swim: Ex-county standouts help Cal women repeat as NCAA champs (updated)

Former O.C. Register swimmers of the year Cindy Tran (Edison) and Melanie Klaren (Aliso Niguel) along with diver Kahley Rowell (Santa Margarita) celebrated a NCAA Division 1 championship with their Cal teammates Saturday night at Auburn.

The Cal women scored 412.5 points to outdistance runner-up Georgia at 366.

After claiming a second consecutive 100 backstroke title (50.31) on Friday night, Tran didn’t make a final Saturday but Klaren placed 10th in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.99.

Klaren, a freshman, also placed 12th in the 100 back on Friday with a 52.77.

Tran, a sophomore, also grabbed ninth in the 100 fly with a quick 51.62 on Friday. She also was a valuable relay swimmer on the Golden Bears’ winning 200 and 400 medley relays at the three-day meet.

Tran and Klaren were co-swimmers of the year for O.C. Register in 2010.

Rowell placed fifth on platform and gave the Golden Bears enough points Saturday to seal the victory. The Mission Viejo Nadadores product became the first Cal diver to reach NCAAs in 20 years.

Swim: Ex-Edison star claims second NCAA title

Cal sophomore and Edison graduate Cindy Tran defended her title in the 100-yard backstroke by touching in a sizzling 50.31 seconds at the NCAA Division 1 championships at Auburn on Friday night.

Tran, a two-time Register female swimmer of the year, also placed ninth in the 100 butterfly (51.62) and helped Cal capture the 200 medley relay in an American record 1:34.24.

Georgia’s Megan Romano claimed the 200 freestyle in an American record 1:41.21 while Texas A & M’s Breeja Larson set the American record in the 100 breaststroke with a 57.71.

USC senior Katinka Hosszu smashed the U.S. Open and NCAA record with a 3:56.54 in the 400 individual medley.
