One of the best football games Thursday night – Laguna Hills at Irvine – will feature one of the county’s hottest recruits in Irvine lineman Nik Abele (6-6, 255), shown as #77 at the left making a sack. Recruiters are giving the two-way lineman a lot of attention.

La Habra replaces Espy in my county football poll

October 27th, 2008, 8:44 am by

I must be feeling confident about who’s the best football team in the county when I’m writing about … my No. 10.

In my voting this for the county rankings, I welcome back the La Habra Highlanders and San Diego State-commit Ronnie Hillman (left) to my top-10, replacing Esperanza. The Aztecs have been hanging on for weeks and going overtime against Marina- even though the Vikings are vastly improved – creates enough doubt.

Esperanza, of course, will have a chance starting this week against Newport to change my mind, so I’m not forgetting about the Aztecs and that defense.

Los Al’s Richardson receives offer from UCLA

October 24th, 2008, 9:26 am by

Los Alamitos junior wide out Paul Richardson has been offered a scholarship by UCLA, he confirmed after the Griffins’ 23-19 victory Thursday against No. 1 Edison.

Richardson said the Bruins are the first team to offer him but there certainly will be many others.

I think USC also would be smart to offer Richardson, who is great at leaping for catches.

Richardson’s father, Paul, played receiver at UCLA with Troy Aikman. If ‘SC does get into the mix, the family connection could be a tough hurdle.

Tesoro gets my vote for No. 1 in county football

October 20th, 2008, 8:14 am by

It wasn’t exactly a slam-dunk but my vote for No. 1 in the county football poll went to Tesoro, which knocked off previously No. 1-ranked Mission Viejo in impressive fashion. Tesoro can play better than it did Friday and that should be a scary thought for San Clemente this week.

Tesoro could have won that game at least 38-14 but didn’t capitalize on some chances in the third quarter.

Sunset and Trinity updates

October 15th, 2008, 7:29 pm by

Here are updates for the Sunset and Trinity leagues:

Sunset League

Somebody might post a winning record in league and miss the playoffs. It happened to Los Alamitos last year. The Griffins (5-0) were the preseason favorite to win it. The league title should be decided Oct. 23 when the Griffins play host to Edison (4-1). If Edison can get healthy, then it should challenge for the title. Esperanza (4-1) and Newport Harbor (4-1) will be in the mix and will play Oct. 31. An at-large bid is available in the Pac-5, but it went to the Trinity League last year.

Trinity League

This race is as open as it has been in years. St. John Bosco (5-0), led by Washington-bound quarterback Keith Price, should be the favorite. Orange Lutheran (4-1), Servite (3-2) and Mater Dei (3-2) could fall anywhere. The Friars might be the best team of the three, but you can’t count out Mater Dei and quarterback Matt Barkley. The Lancers are on a three-game winning streak. There is a good possibility that only three teams will get in the playoffs, so every game is important.

Football tough guys will wear pink

October 14th, 2008, 11:34 pm by

If you think the color pink doesn’t belong on a football field, think again.

In a very cool show of strength and support, the football teams at Tesoro and Los Alamitos (coached by Brian Barnes and his father, John, respectively) will feature players wearing new pink football gloves that have been donated by Cutters Gloves.

The pink gloves are a sign of strength in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Los Al will do the honors first Thursday against Marina. Tesoro will don the gloves Friday for its FSN-televised showdown against Mission Viejo at 7:30 p.m.

“They’re fired up to wear them,” Coach Brian Barnes said of the gloves.

Diablos get my No. 1 vote but for how long?

October 13th, 2008, 8:21 am by

It could be an interesting week for us football pollsters and those who debate the county top-10. What if Mission Viejo and Servite both lose? Tesoro, Edison or Los Alamitos could be headed for the top spot. My early thought is that the Diablos and Friars will both win.

Anyway, here’s how I voted this week in the county football poll (The Diablos finally got my No. 1 vote):

Evans, Richardson lift Los Alamitos past Narbonne

October 11th, 2008, 1:58 am by

HARBOR CITY – Quarterback Clark Evans and wide receiver Paul Richardson each gave career-best performances for Los Alamitos on Friday night.

But the Griffins’ special teams deserved a save as the fourth-ranked team in Orange County defeated Los Angeles City Section power Narbonne, 41-28, in a meeting of undefeated teams.

After Evans’ tossed his career-high fifth touchdown pass to give Los Alamitos (5-0) a 35-28 lead with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter, sophomore Nick Richardson recovered the ensuing squib kick at Narbonne’s 31.

In a game that featured a combined 831 yards of offense, the recovery proved crucial. Behind some short, hard-nosed runs by Evans, the Griffins chewed up the next 3:28 before Evans slid feet-first for a 4-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left.

 The extra point failed.

“It was a huge play,” Paul Richardson said of the recovery. “Nick Richardson wanted the ball more than they wanted it.”

Paul Richardson showed he wanted the ball. All four of his receptions were for touchdowns, his single-game high. The junior finished with four catches for 118 yards.

The Colorado-bound Evans passed for 228 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 18 carries for 81 yards, including the late touchdown.

Evans combined with running back Cody Perez (91 yards) and Nathan Castaneda (62 yards) to give the Griffins 234 yards on the ground.

Narbonne (4-1) is ranked No. 1 in the L.A. City Section and featured USC-commit Bryon Moore at wide receiver and safety. The Gauchos also had more size than the Griffins.

“It seems like we made more clutch plays to win,” Los Alamitos coach John Barnes said.

One of the biggest came on Evans’ fifth touchdown pass, which went to Darryl Jenkins. On a third-and-16, Los Alamitos protected Evans, who spotted Jenkins behind a linebacker in the middle of the field. Evans’ throw to the 20 narrowly beat the defender. Jenkins spun after the catch and raced in the end zone.

Los Alamitos led, 21-14, at halftime on three touchdown passes from Evans to Richardson.

The Griffins opened a 21-6 lead on the duo’s third connection, a 56-yard strike with 3:38 left in the second quarter. On the play, Evans escaped a near-sack at his feet and lofted a deep pass to Richardson, who out-jumped his defender at the 15 before scoring.

“That was super-human,” Barnes said. “Play of the year.”

Still, Narbonne tied the score at 21 and 28.

Los Al has key injury for showdown with La Habra

October 1st, 2008, 9:46 am by

Los Alamitos linebacker Mike Collins (shoulder) will not play in Friday night’s clash against La Habra, Griffins coach John Barnes said. Los Al hopes to have Collins back for Edison on Oct. 23. Despite the news, I think Los Alamitos wins the biggest game of the week and snaps the Highlanders’ impressive 16-game winning streak. The difference should be Clark Evans.
