Fryer: How CIF works ...

Got a couple of e-mails on this, about rules changes (re: transfers, eligibility, etc.), so here is some good info ...

Rules are made by the member schools. Leagues are created by the member schools. Playoff divisions are created by the member schools. And much more is in the control of the member schools. CIF is very much a representive/republic organization.

At CIF-SS Council meetings proposals from member schools are made, and at those meetings proposals are approved or voted down.

And, according to the rules the schools created, interscholastic athletics are very self-policing.

Good example is the deal last year with Coach Kevin Reynolds and Villa Park basketball. The CIF was brought in to take a look a the data, the CIF suggested a 10-game suspension for Reynolds, and the Orange Unified School District and Villa Park HS felt a much shorter suspension was appropriate, and that shorter one was the one administered.

If a school, league, whomever does not like the rules regarding transfers, or the number of teams in the playoffs, they need to forge a solid proposal and bring it to the Council.

Luke Gane was diagnosed with aplastic anemia before the 2008 season. He underwent chemotherapy and needed a bone marrow transplant. It turned out that one of his twin brothers was the correct match. Girls Division VI-A County Outlook, Players to Watch

COUNTY OUTLOOK

Bethel Baptist: The Warriors have a winnable wild-card game against Baker Valley, but then they get dropped in the main draw against top-seeded Packinghouse Christian Academy.

Orangewood Academy: The Spartans got the No. 4 seed, but they have to play a wild-card game to get into the main draw because they finished fourth in the San Joaquin League.

Tarbut V'Torah: The Lions, who took the Express League title, get the San Jacinto Valley Academy-Summit View West winner in the first round. The Lions are on the bottom half of the bracket with Avalon, so they have the potential to make a run.
