Diocese/Mater Dei vs. CIF-SS … the latest

August 26th, 2011, 12:06 pm by

A mediation meeting is scheduled between the two parties, Diocese of Orange/Mater Dei and the CIF-Southern Section, as part of the legal complaint flied by the Diocese, on behalf of Mater Dei, against the CIF-Southern Section.

The complaint alleges unfair business practices by the CIF-SS office against Mater Dei.

A mediation typically is a legal effort to resolve an ongoing dispute or disputes between  two or more parties.

Perhaps this will be the final chapter?

How this all got started can be found here.

The Wigod Press Conference

August 25th, 2011, 2:27 pm by

Well, it was mostly a “Meet Rob” deal. Rob Wigod, the new CIF-Southern Section commissioner who had been an assistant commissioner for several years, introduced the CIF-SS staff past and present who were there, his family, and some former coaches when he was an athlete and guys he coached with at Lakewood and Los Alamitos.

Probably 30 media people in attendance, all of whom received Blue Books (the CIF-SS constitution and collection of rules and by-laws), the CIF-SS football schedule book, and some instructions on how to vote on CIF-SS rankings. I bet that fewer than half of the media group will ever open the Blue Book … sadly, that would put the media group not far behind school administrators in that category.

Of the group, only four asked questions (focused on the free hot wings, were ya, fellas?). My questions, and Wigod’s answers — and paraphrasing some here, so as to get to the meat of it …

What would you ask the commissioner?

Sedric Hill eligible at Edison, on his way to Hawaii

August 24th, 2011, 3:04 pm by

Senior receiver Sedric Hill has been granted athletic eligibility at Edison for the upcoming football season, a CIF State appeals panel ruled today. He will play in Edison’s season opener on Friday in Hawaii.

Hill transferred during the spring from Mater Dei, where he was an All-Trinity League first-team selection in 2010. His transfer was not approved by the CIF-Southern Section as the section office ruled that Hill’s transfer was athletically motivated.

According to CIF-SS rule 510, a transfer that appears to be athletically motivated, in part or in whole, will bar the transferred student-athlete from gaining athletic eligibility at the student’s new school.

Hill attended the CIF State hearing with his father and spoke on his own behalf.  Immediately after the hearing he boarded a plane to Maui where Edison opens its 2011 season Friday against Baldwin of Wailuku.

New assistant commissioner at CIF-SS

July 29th, 2011, 12:38 pm by

Glenn Martinez, most recently a vice principal at Charter Oak of Covina, is the new assistant commissioner in charge of football, wrestling and baseball at the CIF-Southern Section office. He replaces Rob Wigod, who was promoted to commissioner upon the retirement of Jim Staunton.

Martinez is best known as the very successful baseball coach at Bishop Amat of La Puente.

For the CIF-SS release on the hiring of Martinez, click here.

It was a position for which many top-shelf athletic persons applied. A very-rumored name in the mix was Servite’s highly-regarded athletic director/wrestling coach Alan Clinton. Upon our most-recent conversation with him, Clinton said he had  not inquired about the CIF-SS assistant commissioner post.

Montclair Prep drops athletics

July 18th, 2011, 3:32 pm by

Click on the photo to find Steve Fryer's rankings of the top athletic programs in Orange County.

Montclair Prep, a private school in Van Nuys, has eliminated its athletics program … read the LA Times story here.

The reason — finances.

A couple of stats not in that story — the school won four CIF-Southern Section football championships, the most recent in 1994; won several CIF-SS boys basketball championships, including in 2005 and ’06; and won six CIF-SS baseball titles.

Montclair Prep has produced some MLB players like Torey Lovullo.

A Montclair Prep student-athlete who wishes to transfer likely won’t have to make the usually-required change of address to become ineligible at the school to which the student-athlete would transfer, as a hardship waiver should be easily acquired. And, like any other transfer, a transfer can be made without the change of address if the move is made prior to the first day of the student-athlete’s sophomore year.

Baseball: Why wasn’t Owens O.C. player of the year?

June 22nd, 2011, 1:08 pm by

Our selection for OC player of the year was Ty Moore, Jr. OF/P at Mater Dei … he was 10-2 with 55 KS, and batted .510 with 37 RBIs.

The CIF-SS Division 1 player of the year was Henry Owens, Sr. P at Edison … 12-1 with three saves, 1.15 ERA and 140 Ks. He  batted 1.000 — he was 1 for 1.

We have a rule — you must be your league’s player of the year to be county player of the year. Owens was not Sunset League player of the year; that was shared by Edison’s Christian Lopes and Eric Snyder.

Moore was Trinity League player of the year.

Nothing against Owens, who might be the best pitcher I have seen in OC baseball since 1990. Owens also is a young man of great character, a team leader. He possessed a rare combination of nasty competitiveness with a tranquil calmness.

Moore was one of the top pitchers, too, in the county and probably the county’s finest hitter — that also is a rare combination.

It was a difficult selection.

The Chargers defeated Orange Lutheran 4-3 in the second round of the Division I playoffs.

Both teams combined for 7 errors. Sean Whiteman walked in the go-ahead run in the 6th, and Henry Owens took it over from there. The Miami Hurricanes commit struck out three batters in two innings of work to pick up the save.

Edison will be on the road to face Lakewood on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Orange Lutheran stuns Foothill, awaits Edison (video)

May 20th, 2011, 10:26 pm by

Orange Lutheran defeated Foothill 8-3 in the first round of the division I playoffs. The Lancers will host No.1 ranked Edison next Tuesday.

I asked Orange Lutheran’s Andre Real (HR, 4 RBI) what he thought of Edison:

“I know Henry Owens is a great pitcher…”

I interrupted and told Real that Owens tossed a no-hitter earlier today.

All he could do was laugh.

Football: Regional bowl games approved for 2012

April 29th, 2011, 9:09 pm by

The CIF Federated Council has approved the creation of North and South regional football championship bowl games starting in 2012, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

The games will be qualifiers for the state bowl games.

The Southern Section was against the proposal. One of the reasons was making the high school season potentially a 16-game trek for teams.

The CIF-Southern Section’s student council has produced this outstanding video on sportsmanship.

It’s definitely an inspiring presentation and a great reminder on what is most important in high school sports.

One of the drives forces behind the council is assistant commissioner Kristine Palle, the former girls swim coach at Mission Viejo.
