CIF Swim Central: Engel’s blazing 50 freestyle will stand

One of the side-stories at the CIF-SS Division 3 swim finals Thursday night was the fate of Lindsey Engel’s sizzling leadoff leg to Crean Lutheran’s disqualified 200-yard freestyle relay.

Engel led off the race with an Orange County-leading time of 23.04 seconds. The Saints’ relay was disqualified after their No. 2 swimmer jumped early off her block.

But since the jump didn’t affect Engel’s time, the sophomore’s time will stand, Southern Section meet director Doug Glaeser confirmed Friday night.

“Her time is solid,” Glaeser said of Engel’s 23.04 – which tied her for fourth in county history.

CIF Swim Central: Crean’s Eastin breaks another CIF Division 3 record (update)

Crean Lutheran super-freshman Ella Eastin cranked a county-leading and lifetime-best 53.93 in the 100-yard butterfly to set a second CIF Division 3 record tonight in Riverside.

Eastin become only the third county girl ever to break 54 seconds in the fly. Tara Thomas holds the county record with a 53.54.

It will be interesting to see if Katie McLaughlin of JSerra joins the 53-second job on Saturday at the Div. 1 finals.

Update 1

Crean Lutheran super-freshman Ella Eastin has become just the third O.C. girl ever to break two minutes in the 200-yard individual medley with a 1:59,88 in a record performance at the CIF-SS Division 3 swim finals in Riverside.

Eastin slips past Janet Evans for No. 2 in county history and now only trails county-record holder Kristen Caverly (1:58.86).

CIF Swim Central: Crean Lutheran’s Engel lowers own CIF record in backstroke

Crean Lutheran’s Lindsey Engel has blazed to the first record of the CIF-SS swimming championships at Riverside City College.

The super-sophomore rocketed to a time of 53.60 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke at the Division 3 prelims moments ago.

The O.C. Waves club swimmer edged her own section record by four one-hundredths of a second.

It will intriguing to see what Engel delivers for Thursday’s finals. She is shaved and tapered, and it is showing. She needs to break 53.23 to move past Melanie Klaren for No. 2 in the county list.
