Girls soccer: CIF-SS guidelines on tournament matches decided by Pk’s

December 29th, 2012, 3:58 pm by

With county teams heavily involved in tournament action, it is once again a good time to help clarify the official CIF-SS rule in regards to tournament matches that are decided by penalty kicks.

Here is the CIF-SS policy regarding ties in a tournament:

Teams that advance to the next round of a tournament via penalty kicks are NOT CREDITED WITH A WIN on their overall record. Both teams involved in the match will receive a TIE on their overall record if the match ends tied in regulation and penalty kicks are needed to determine who advances into the next round.

The ONLY EXCEPTION TO RULE STATED ABOVE is in a match where there is no further advancement in a tournament (i.e. championship match, third place match, fifth place match, etc.). In that scenario, the team that wins in penalty kicks gets credited with a win on its overall record. The team that loses penalty kicks is officially credited with a loss on its record.

Diocese/Mater Dei vs. CIF-SS lawsuit settled

November 1st, 2012, 12:39 pm by

The legal action taken two years ago by the Diocese of Orange, on behalf of Mater Dei, that alleged unfair business practices by the CIF-Southern Section has been settled, attorney Jerry Jackson, who represented the Diocese and Mater Dei in the matter, said Thursday.

Jackson said the CIF-Southern Section’s change in leadership, in which Rob Wigod last year replaced the retiring Jim Staunton as section commissioner, as being essential to the settlement. A notice of settlement is scheduled to be issued today at Orange County Superior Court.

“The new commissioner is a breath of fresh air in the CIF-Southern Section,” Jackson said, “and he is a commissioner who realizes that private schools in general, and Mater Dei in particular, are assets and not threats.”

The Diocese filed a legal complaint against the Southern Section in September of 2010, alleging that Mater Dei had been subjected to unfair business practices by the CIF-SS. The complaint alleged that the CIF-SS office had not dealt fairly and consistently in its handling of athletic eligibility issues regarding student-athletes who transferred to Mater Dei.

August 29th, 2012, 1:20 pm by

Intersting, and saddening, story about Rancho Christian of Temecula, which canceled the remainder of its varsity football schedule. What does that mean for the players who might wish to transfer elsewhere?

It’s a sticky situation, for the school and the CIF-Southern Section.

New dates for Mater Dei vs. CIF-SS

September 13th, 2011, 3:42 pm by

There is a Mandatory Settlement Conference at Orange County Superior Court next Feb. 16, and a jury trial on Feb. 27. A Mandatory Settlement Conference involves legal representatives of the two sides meeting, in the presence of a judge, in an attempt to resolve the matter before going to trial.

The Diocese of Orange, representing Mater Dei, last year filed a legal complaint against the CIF-Southern Section office alleging the office engaged in biased and unfair business practices against Mater Dei.

Mater Dei vs. CIF-SS still on

September 6th, 2011, 12:33 pm by

A mediation session between the two parties, with the Diocese of Orange representing Mater Dei in the matter, did not result in resolution, according to Diocese spokesman Stephen Bohannon.

The Diocese last fall filed a legal complaint against the CIF-Southern Section, alleging bias and unfair business practices by the CIF-SS office toward Mater Dei.

Litigation continues, with no date or time frame set for future activity.
