BOYS WATER POLO

DIVISION I

Newport Harbor 14, Corona del Mar 10 (F) - CdM never led.

Second-seeded Newport Harbor leads No. 3 Corona del Mar, 11-6, after three periods. Blake Kelly has four goals, including two on extra. Tars are 4 for 6 on extra; CdM are 1 for 5. Chris Whitelegge had nines for Newport.

DIVISION II

**Final score: Mater Dei 17-6. The Monarchs will face JSerra in the Division II final. Despite going scoreless in the second half, Alex Wherry is the best polo player I've seen.

**Update: Newport Harbor leads CdM 9-4 at halftime. Blake Kelly has three goals for the Sailors. Back on this side of the pool, Mater Dei now leads 17-6.

**Neal O'Hara scores his second goal, at least I think it was O'Hara. The ref is in my way again. .16-6 MD.

**Heading to the fourth: MD leads 15-6. Meanwhile, Newport Harbor is up 8-3 over CdM.

**Apparently, Wherry isn't needed here in the third. He hasn't scored, but Anthony Daboub just did to give the Monarchs a 14-6 lead. And we were just reminded by the MD student section that Daboub is a sophomore.

**Newport Harbor leads CdM 6-3 after the 1st period. I'm giving you pool-to-pool coverage.

**Timeout Villa Park. Mater Dei is threatening to swim away and hide with this game. Neal O'Hara's goal with 2:42 left gives MD a 13-6 lead.

**Robby Leither strikes first here in the third. Mater Dei's lead is now 11-6. Christian Grant answers back, Mater Dei 12-6. Alex Wherry has taken one shot and it blocked by the crossbar.

**Second half is underway. Is there anyway that Villa Park can double team Wherry?

**Halftime: Mater Dei leads 11-5. Meanwhile, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar are tied at 2-2.

**Wherry x7 = 10-5 Mater Dei lead with 1:00 left in 2nd qt.

**Alex Wherry is slowing overtaking Nick Santala as the best water polo player I have ever seen. Wherry has five goals as the Monarchs now lead 8-4. The fans are chanting his name.

**End of 1: Mater Dei leads 6-3.

**BREAKING NEWS. Dan Albano has arrived!

**Timeout Mater Dei. Monarchs lead 5-2 with 2:00 minutes left in 1st. Alex Wherry has two goals for the Monarchs.

**Timeout Villa Park and it comes at the perfect time. MD now leads 3-0. Liam Gaughan and Alex Wherry have scored. There is 4:08 left in the 1st. I can no longer feel my fingers.

**Hey, ref, you're in my way. Meanwhile, Mater Dei got hit with two ordinary fouls and an exclusion on Villa Park's opening possession. No worries, David Guibord just scored. 1-0 Monarchs.

**Someone needs to build a dome. I don't know how Albano does it. I've been 25 minutes and I'm freezing.

**Villa Park-Mater Dei is up next at 6:30 p.m. Both teams are in the pool. Members of the El Toro team has arrived. I wonder if Dan Albano is with them.

*****************************************

Servite-JSerra

**Final score: JSerra 14, Servite 8. Nick Santala led the Lions with 6 goals. Spencer Van Horne led Servite with five goals.

**Nick Santala is up to six goals. He's by far the best water polo player that I've ever seen (remember, this is the first water polo game that I've ever seen). JSerra leads 14-4 with 3:02 left in the 4th.

**The rout is on as JSerra has increased its lead to 12-4. Charlie Howarth just scored. That's six consecutive goals...but wait, Servite has ended the streak, Michael Carrillo just scored to make it 12-5 with 5:20 left in the 4th.

**We're at the end of the third. JSerra leads 10-4. Nick Santala has four goals. He can't be stopped. Some things I don't understand about this sport. What is an ordinary foul? And what is exclusion?

**We are in the third period of the Servite-JSerra tilt and the Lions are leading 9-4. Nick Santala has three goals for the Lions. Sit back and relax. The Lions led 6-4 at halftime, but have scored three consecutive to start the third.

Here are the Orange County teams in the Pac-5 Division:

Edison (10-0) – The Chargers are the top-seeded team in the division, and have been No. 1 in Orange County since beating then-No. 1 Servite in Week 4. The Chargers have a very-balanced offense. Quarterback Matt Viles is the No. 2 passer in the count, behind Rancho Alamitos’ Mike Frank, with 2,173 yards. Viles did not play in last week’s 48-0 victory over Marina, a precautionary move because Viles dislocated his non-throwing elbow in the Week 8 victory over Fountain Valley. Wade Houston and Davion Orphey are productive running backs, and Jeff Trojan and Michael Rivera leads the talented . The Chargers are averaging 33 points a game while allowing nine a game. Edison went 5-0 in the Sunset League to win the league championship.

Dana Hills (8-2) – Dana Hills finished second in the South Coast League with a 4-1 league record. The Dolphins’ league loss was to Mission Viejo, 49-17, which ended a six-game winning streak. Receiver/defensive back Chris Kearney is one of the top two-way players in the county. He has a team-high 51 receptions. Quarterback Josh Dean has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,536 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dana Hills is averaging 36 points a game. The Dolphins, ranked No. 4 in Orange County have a challenging first-round assignment, a home game against No. 7 Orange Lutheran, the second-place team from the Trinity League.

Orange Lutheran (6-4) – The Lancers finished second in the Trinity League. Three of their losses are to very good teams – Pickerington Central of Ohio, which is 10-2; Redlands East Valley (10-0) and Servite (9-1). Lutheran has battled injuries to key players, like quarterback Bobby Wheatley (shoulder) and running back/linebacker Garrett Gilliland (ankle). Mike Markovsky has played well in Wheatley’s absence, and another offensive bright spot has been running back Damani Wilson (990 yards, eight rushing touchdowns).

Mater Dei (6-4) – The Monarchs beat St. John Bosco of Bellflower on Friday to finish third in the Trinity League. They play an old foe – Bishop Amat of La Puente, which was a longtime rival of Mater Dei’s in the old Angelus League and later in the Serra League. Mater Dei has lost to good teams like Orange Lutheran, Servite and Edison, and beat Centennial of Corona when Centennial was No. 6 in California. Junior quarterback Max Wittick seems to improve weekly, and Victor Blackwell might be the best receiver in the county (42 catches, 899 yards and 10 touchdowns).

Newport Harbor (6-4) – Newport Harbor finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Sunset League, with Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos. Coin flips put Newport as the league’s No. 4 representative so the Sailors needed to qualify as the division’s at-large team, and got it. The Sailors beat Los Alamitos in a league game. Receiver/linebacker Cecil Whiteside, who committed to Cal, was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game. Cedric Whitaker has emerged as a fine running back, with 967 yards.

Servite (9-1) – Servite went 5-0 to win the Trinity League championship, the first time a team has gone undefeated in the league since it was created in 2006. It is the fifth league championship in Coach Troy Thomas’ five years coaching the Friars. Cody Fajardo has been outstanding at quarterback. He is the team’s leading rusher, at 661 yards, and has passed for 1,647 yards and 14 touchdowns. Rudy Guerrero and Chris Nicholls have been big-play receivers, and Nicholls is a threat running the ball, too. Servite averaged 42 points a game in league.

San Clemente (6-4) – The Tritons finished third in the South Coast League, with a 3-2 league record. They lost to Dana Hills and Mission Viejo in league. San Clemente lost to La Habra in a nonleague game, but beat two good ones, too, Trabuco Hills and El Toro, in nonleague. Quarterback Chase Rettig has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,641 yards and 18 touchdowns, but has 11 thrown interceptions, too. Receiver Dominick Ela has 49 catches for 622 yards. The Tritons have given up a lot of points, 26 a game. They have a tough first-round challenge – Servite.

Los Alamitos (8-2) – The Griffins finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Sunset League. After a coin flip knocked Newport Harbor down to No. 4, Los Alamitos’ victory over Fountain Valley last week made the Griffins the league’s No. 2 playoff representative. They play Long Beach Poly in the first round Friday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach; it is Los Al’s home game, but Vets also is Poly’s home field. Griffins running back Nick Richardson has been spectacular. He is averaging 173 yards a game. Quarterback Dylan Lagarde, who transferred during the season from Poly, had a fine game against Fountain Valley last week, going 14 for 21 for 172 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.

Fountain Valley (8-2) – The Barons go into the playoffs on a two-game losing streak. They lost to Edison, 24-0, in the “Battle for the Bell” game, then got beat by Los Alamitos, 31-22, last week. Kyle Middlebrooks has been terrific at running back. He is averaging 160 yards a game and has rushed for 18 touchdowns. Ryan Steadman has been a standout at receiver. He has 30 receptions for 536 yards. The Barons gave up an average of 26 points a game in league, but overall have scored 35 points a game.

Mission Viejo (10-0) – Mission Viejo went 5-0 to win the South Coast League championship. The Diablos have dominated. They averaged 52 points a game in league, while allowing only nine points a game. Their closes game all season was a 19-point nonleague victory over Loyola of Los Angeles. Dallin McEwen has been steady at quarterback, completing 61 percent of his throws for 1,559 yards and 17 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Receiver Joey Branker has 41 receptions and is averaging 24 yards a catch. The Diablos’ outstanding defense is led by linebacker Tre Madden and defensive back Jake Marshall.

The Breakdown: Pac-5 Division

Seeded teams: 1. Edison (10-0), Sunset League champions; 2. Mission Viejo (10-0), South Coast League champions; 3. Servite (9-1), Trinity League champions; 4. Lakewood (9-1) Moore League champions.

At-large: Newport Harbor (6-4), Sunset League

Darkhorse: Mater Dei (6-4). It’s kind of odd to label the Monarchs a darkhorse team, but they are. The Monarchs play a first-round away game, at Bishop Amat of La Puente, and that is a challenging assignment. A key to any success Mater Dei would have in the playoffs will be Max Wittek, a junior who emerged as the starter after a couple of weeks of nonleague play and has improved a great deal as the season progressed. Junior receiver Victor Blackwell is a major big-play threat.

Players to watch: Edison quarterback Matt Viles, Edison receiver Jeff Trojan, Edison linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, Mission Viejo defensive back Jake Marshall, Mission Viejo linebacker Tre Madden, Mission Viejo receiver Joey Branker, Servite quarterback Cody Fajardo, Servite receiver Chris Nicholls, Servite defensive back Michael Marcoux, Bishop Amat of La Puente quarterback Jerry McClanahan, Bishop Amat running back Jay Anderson, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks quarterback Ryan Kasdorf, Notre Dame running back Kenneth Boggs, Notre Dame receiver Tyler Thomas, Lakewood quarterback Jesse Scroggins, Dana Hills receiver/defensive back Chris Kearney, Dana Hills running back Brandon Howe, Mater Dei quarterback Max Wittek, Mater Dei receiver Victor Blackwell, San Clemente quarterback Chase Rettig, San Clemente running back David Espino, Los Alamitos running back Nick Richardson, Los Alamitos defensive back Josh Barut, Los Alamitos defensive back Robert Watson, Fountain Valley running back Kyle Middlebrooks, Fountain Valley linebacker Austin Nguyen, Orange Lutheran running back/linebacker Garrett Gilliland, Orange Lutheran running back Damani Wilson, Newport Harbor receiver/linebacker Cecil Whiteside, Newport Harbor running back Cedric Whitaker, Long Beach Wilson quarterback Brett Harper, Long Beach Poly running back Cory Westbrook, Long Beach Millikan running back Alden Darby.

Best first-round matchup: Orange Lutheran (6-4) at Dana Hills (8-2). Both were in last week’s top 10, with Dana Hills at No. 4 and Lutheran at No. 7. Dana Hills’ two losses were to the top two teams in the county, Edison and Mission Viejo. Lutheran beat Mater Dei, and three of its losses were to very good teams – Pickerington Central of Ohio, which is 10-2; Servite (9-1) and Redlands East Valley (10-0).

Harbor was the No. 4 team in the Sunset League -- the top three teams were guaranteed entry into the Pac-5 Division playoffs, so Harbor had to hope for the division's at-large berth, which it got this morning. Coin flips made Harbor the No. 4 team, after it finished in a three-way tie for second in the Sunset with Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley.

No. 2-seeded Tesoro, South Coast League champion, in the playoffs defeated Great Oak of Temecula, 66-40; Lancaster, 63-46; West Valley of Hemet, 75-61; and Santa Monica, 62-58.

Probable starters: Ventura: Ricky Fausset (6-2, Sr., F, 12 ppg); Jordan Garrett (6-8, Jr., F, 5 ppg); Michael Melonas (6-6, Sr., C, 9 ppg); Kory Kindle (5-10, Sr., G, 5 ppg); Paul Batausa (5-7, Sr., G, 10 ppg); Tesoro: Brett Gudim (6-1, Sr., F, 9 ppg); Robbie Picazo (6-3, Sr., F, 12 ppg); Chris Manresa (6-8, Sr., C, 16 ppg); Cody Wittick (6-2, Jr., G, 8 ppg); Nick Holmes (5-11, Sr., G, 5 ppg).

Outlook: Tesoro has advanced beyond the quarterfinals for the first time. Ventura won the CIF-SS Division I-A championship in 2006.

Tesoro starting point guard Matt Bailey suffered a broken foot in December, but has returned to action for the playoffs. He is rotating with Holmes at the position.

Manresa has been spectacular in the playoffs, in which he is averaging 23 points and 16 rebounds a game. Picazo, Gudim and Wittick were starters on Tesoro's football team that advanced to the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division championship game.

Ventura has won 11 in a row.

The Cougars' Kindle also played soccer during the winter sports season. He has a soccer scholarship from Bakersfield.

Ventura coach Tesoro coach Dan Larson is impressed by Tesoro.

“They've been a lot of fun to watch on tape,” Larson said. “I've been trying to find a crack in their armor somewhere. We've got a good inside game, but we're not quite as good there as Manresa.”

Tesoro coach Steve Garrett sees a lot of similarities with the two teams.

“Ventura, like us, is a senior-led team,” Garrett said. “They're very deep at all positions.”

TV: FSN Prime Ticket

How they got there: No. 1-seeded Mater Dei, Trinity League champion, in the playoffs defeated San Clemente, 75-48; Upland, 85-52; Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley, 72-65; and Etiwanda, 70-60. No. 2-seeded King, Big VIII League champion, in the playoffs beat Downey, 61-39; Long Beach Wilson, 71-64; Redlands, 82-62; and Dominguez of Compton, 76-70.

Probable starters: Mater Dei: Gary Franklin (6-3, Jr., G, 14 ppg), Tyler Lamb (6-4, Jr., G, 14 ppg); Connor Hughes 6-6, Sr., F, 5 ppg); David Wear (6-10, Sr., F, 16 ppg); Travis Wear (6-10, Sr., F, 15 ppg). King: Taylor Cunningham (6-1, Sr., G, 10 ppg); Jeremiah Campbell (6-2, Sr., G, 8 ppg); Kawhi Leonard (6-7, Sr., F, 27 ppg); Chris Harriel (6-4, Sr., F, 15 ppg); Tony Snell (6-7, Sr., C, 15 ppg)

Outlook: Mater Dei shoots for its 20th CIF-SS boys basketball championship, and its first since 2006. The Monarchs have gone two years in a row without a section boys basketball title, the longest such streak in the 26-year coaching career of Gary McKnight.

McKnight's record in CIF-SS playoff games: 115-7.

The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 nationally, and have kept winning even after All-County guard Andy Brown suffered a season-ending knee injury in January.

The team still is loaded with top players, with the Wear twins headed for North Carolina and Lamb and Franklin committed to UCLA and USC, respectively. Hughes has a volleyball scholarship from UC Irvine.

King, last year's Division I-A champion, has plenty of good ones, too, like Leonard, who has been outstanding in the playoffs. He signed with San Diego State. Harriel signed with Portland State.

King's losses were to Wheeler of Marietta, Ga., and Centennial of Corona. Wheeler beat King by five points in a tournament in South Carolina.

Mater Dei beat Wheeler by nine in a Florida tournament.

McKnight's assessment: “We're going to have to be very disciplined and get back quickly on defense to stop their transition game.”

King coach Tim Sweeney said, “We're going to have to play our ‘A' game, our ‘A-plus' game, really, but we've been able to put that together our last couple of games.”
