PAC-5 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Long Beach Poly (13-0) vs. Tesoro (13-0)

Saturday, 7:30 p.m., at Angel Stadium

TV: Prime Ticket

Outlook: The old guard against the new kids on the block -- and I’m not talking about the boy band from the '90s.

This game features the Jackrabbits and all of their tradition (17 CIF titles) and famed alumni (Cameron Diaz, Snoop Dogg, etc.) facing the Titans, who will be playing for their first Pac-5 title.

Long Beach Poly hasn’t played its best during the playoffs. The Jackrabbits had to rally to defeat Bishop Amat and Lakewood, they they needed a late touchdown to defeat Esperanza.

Has it been a case of a team struggling or just a hard-nosed, battle-tested team finding ways to win? We’ll see.

For the Titans, everything starts with their offensive line. This group (Evan Finkenberg, Josh Cabral, Ty Vanderford, Sil Ajawera and Brad Handfield) can block out the sun.

But can they handle the Jackrabbits' defensive stars, such as Iuta Tepa (13 sacks), Eli Edwards (five sacks) and George Daily-Lyles (140 tackles)?

Can the Tesoro defense slow down the Poly ground attack that is led by Daveon Barner (1,127 yards) and Melvin Richardson (1,306 yards)?

Long Beach Poly is a predominantly running team, so if the Titans can take away the run like they did against Orange Lutheran, then a Pac-5 title and a CIF State bowl game will be next up for Coach Brian Barnes and Co.

Will it happen?

SOUTHERN DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Laguna Hills (12-0) vs. Mayfair of Lakewood (10-3)

Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Cerritos College

Outlook: Now faced with the task of trying to score against the Laguna Hills defense: the Mayfair Monsoons. Good luck.

The Hawks are allowing 8.6 points a game. They have been even nastier in the playoffs: Artesia scored nine, Santiago posted seven and Norwalk scored eight.

Can’t we just give Mayfair six points and hand the trophy to the Hawks?

The Hawks also revved up their offense in the playoffs. Laguna Hills has scored 41 and 42 points in the past two rounds of the playoffs.

Senior quarterback Robert Refsnyder is the leader. His stats aren’t impressive, but you can’t measure his worth in stats. He has rushed for 503 yards and nine touchdowns. He also has passed for nine touchdowns.

Derek Browning leads the ground attack with 1,250 yards.

The Monsoons scored 14 points against Corona del Mar and one score was set up thanks to 41-yard fumble return.

All of Mayfair’s offensive leaders were kept in check by the Sea Kings' defense. The Sea Kings' defense is tough, but it isn’t Laguna Hills tough.

This could mean pain and doom for the Monsoons.

EAST VALLEY DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Twentynine Palms (10-3) vs. St. Margaret’s (13-0)

Saturday, 7:30 pm., at St. Margaret’s High

Outlook: Did you know that Twentynine Palms is a city? I didn’t. Did you also know that it is going to take the Wildcats approximately 2½ hours, according to Mapquest, to traverse the highways to make it to San Juan Capistrano?

Will the trip be worth it? Probably not.

Yucca Valley put a little scare into the Tartans in the quarterfinals, but Maranatha eventually paid for it. The Tartans smashed the Minutemen, 63-0, to tie the county record for consecutive victories at 41.

On Friday night they go for the record and the Wildcats are in the way.

Matthew Duenes has rushed for 342 yards in the last two playoff games for the Tartans. He scored four touchdowns last week.

The Wildcats began the playoffs with a pair of easy victories, 63-22 over Brethren Christian and 40-0 over Aquinas of San Bernardino.

Montreal Harris is a factor on both sides of the ball. According to my esteemed colleague, Dan Albano, Harris is attracting interest from Fresno State. He has rushed for 828 yards, scored 19 touchdowns and on defense he has four interceptions.

Can he derail the St. Margaret’s express to victory No. 42?

Will anybody be there to see it?

Memo to St. Margaret’s fans (and you know who you are): Get out and support your team on Saturday night.
