No change to water polo format

October 25th, 2012, 9:47 am by

At this morning’s CIF-Southern Section Council meeting — there are three meeting per school year, and at these meetings is where rules and by-laws are created, deleted or amended — a proposal came forth that would change the seeding format for boys and girls water polo playoffs.

The proposal was denied in a rare tie vote.

The proposal: Seed the CIF-SS boys and girls water playoffs strictly by seeding teams 1-16 for the 16-team playoff brackets. This way, two league champions could play each other in the first round, if that is how teams are seeded. Sometimes, one league’s No. 2 team is considered superior to another league’s No. 1.

Currently, playoff brackets in all sports in the CIF-Southern Section are created to divide teams from the same leagues into different portions of the bracket so that those teams from the same league could not play one another until later rounds, and that a league’s No. 1 team would play another league’s No. 3 team, and a No. 2 team plays another No. 2.  That’s the way it is going to stay.

“Athletically Motivated Transfers”

October 25th, 2012, 9:34 am by

The CIF-Southern Section Council, the section’s rules-making rules-changing body, voted this morning to support a CIF State proposal that would eliminate the “athletically motivated” language from rules regarding transfers.

The Southern Section is one of 10 sections in the state that will meet later to vote on this proposal. It might be that a majority of the state’s other sections will vote against the proposal.

Currently, a student-athlete who transfers could have his athletic eligibility denied at his or her new school if the transfer appears to be athletically motivated.

The state proposal was created by the Trinity League. Trinity League schools are JSerra, Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Servite, St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

The section council, made up of representatives of CIF-SS leagues, voted to support the measure, 45-27.
