Santiago of Corona defeated Canyon 4-1 for the division one championship.

The Comanches Cheyanne Tarango only allowed two hits, but labored in the 7th, walking three batters.

Canyon’s only run came by a Taylor Swearingen home run in the 3rd inning, when Santiago outfielder Brittany Abacherli crashed through the outfield fence trying to make the catch.

Beckman and Mission Viejo celebrate championships (video)

June 3rd, 2011, 3:58 am by

Dodgers Stadium featured an epic double header of CIF championship baseball.

First, Beckman and Woodbridge played each other for an amazing fifth time this season, but this time, the Division 3 championship was on the line. The Patriots rode the arm of James Kaprielian to their first championship, defeating the Warriors 4-1.

Then came the Division 2 championship game between Mission Viejo and Etiwanda. The Diablos captialized on a number of Etiwanda errors to jump on the Eagles early, winning 6-2.

Capistrano Valley proud of their season (video)

March 6th, 2011, 12:10 am by

Loyola outrebounded Capistrano Valley 46-29 and led by as many as 22 points, capturing the CIF Division I-A championship 74-58.

Cougars’ head coach Brian Mulligan knew his team was in dire straights after giving up 39 points in the first half alone.

“This game needed to be in the 60′s or 50′s for us to have a chance,” Mulligan said. “They outrebounded us and they out-transitioned us…those were two things we talked about that absolutely could not happen to us.”

Capo had a hard time covering Julian Harrell’s relentless hustle, and Joe Stein’s sharp-shooting (9/17 FG). However, the Cougars actually outscored 36-35 in the second half, but it was too little too late according to Mulligan.

“We just didn’t execute the game plan really well, but we tried really hard.”

Neutral site turns hostile for Mission Viejo (video)

March 5th, 2011, 11:33 pm by

The Diablos led the Cougars for most of the Div. II-AA championship game until the fourth quarter. Ventura rallied and eventually won in overtime 56-55.

It felt like a road game for Mission Viejo since Capistrano Valley’s student section was out in full force jeering on their rivals from the South Coast league.

Chants of “We hate Mission,” along with the standard “defense” chants of Ventura’s student section might have rattled some teams, but not the Diablos, according to their head coach Troy Roelen.

“We don’t get rattled by that stuff,” Roelen said. “You saw us at the free throw line. We were calm, but a play here or there and we would’ve been right in it.”

After the game, a Ventura school official instructed the Cougars to acknowledge the rabid Capo fans. The reaction was one of the loudest of the night.

What was supposed to be a neutral site, turned out to be a jungle full of black and yellow Cougars.

March 5th, 2011, 3:14 am by

Mater Dei defeated Brea Olinda 63-54 to capture their third consecutive CIF championship. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 16 points for the Monarchs, while the Ladycats’ Alexis Perry led all scorers with 22 points.

Alexyz Vaioltetama believes that this won’t be the last time these two teams will square off. Her teammate Jordan Adams agreed.

“We’re definitely going to see them down the line,” Adams said. “We have to get there too. We have to try and take every opponent seriously and get to that point where we see Brea.”

Amazing game-winner leaves both teams in tears (video)

March 4th, 2011, 12:47 am by

Edison’s Bonnie Samuelson shocked Troy by stealing the inbounds pass and sinking the game-winning shot, giving the Chargers a 45-44 victory over Troy in the Division 1A championship game Thursday night.

But should that game-winner really have been a game-winner?

According to multiple scorebooks, Edison was mistakenly awarded a point in the first quarter. Troy had a lead of 8-7, but the scoreboard read as a tie, 8-8.

“I told them (official scorekeepers) if this comes down to one point, it will be ridiculous,” Troy coach Roger Anderson said. “And it came down to one point.”

Edison’s head coach Dan Wiley said he was never made aware of a possible scoring flub.

“I didn’t know anything about it,” Wiley said. “I was going by the score on the scoreboard.”

Mater Dei Video: Was there a foul?

March 7th, 2010, 1:23 pm by

A “no call” that ended regulation gave the Monarchs the benefit of the doubt. Etiwanda was down 68-65 with 5.2 seconds left, and the Monarchs were looking to foul. The first contact came near mid court as Gary Franklin hacked Jordan Daniels on the pass.

“The final play of the game, we just tried to foul,” Franklin said.

There was no call on the play, as the ball went into the hands of Evan Jenkins. He rised to shoot what would’ve been the tying 3-ball, but his right arm was grabbed by by Mater Dei’s Eli Stalzer. The ball harmlessly fell into the hands of Keala King. Once again there was no call.

“The refs are human. They make calls and they miss calls,” Keala King said. “We’re lucky they didn’t make the call.”

“We were very fortunate,” Mater Dei head coach Gary McKnight said.

Even if the official called a foul. It would’ve still been on the junior Evan Jenkins to hit three free throws in the clutch. Who knows if he would’ve made them. Mater Dei hung on to win their first CIF championship since 2006.

Finally, both sides could have shown more class at the end of the game. Mater Dei was roundly and loudly booed by Etiwanda’s fans during their award ceremony, while Mater Dei’s players and staff egged them on by pointing to their ring fingers.

What do you guys think? Should there have been a foul called?
